Stauffer (also commonly spelled " Stouffer" and "Stover" in North America) is a German surname, the origin of which derives from the Proto-German word ''staupa'', meaning "steep." ''Staupa'' and its Middle High German descendant, ''stouf'', evolved to mean, among other things, a steep hill or mountain. Many of these hills and mountains serve as the basis for the names of such places as Donaustauf, Hohenstaufen, Staufenberg, Regenstauf, Staufen im Breisgau, and the Staufens of Switzerland and Austria. Abraham Stouffer (January 8, 1781 – October 27, 1851) is the founder of the town of Stouffville, Ontario. Background and early years in the United States, 1781-1804 Abraham Stouffer was born January 8, 1781, near Chambersburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Abraham Stauffer (1747–1809) and Barbara Hershey (1750–1795). Abraham was a descendant of Christian Stauffer (1579–1671), a fugitive "obstinate" Anabaptist (Mennonite) preacher in Switzerland. Ellis Bagley Stouffer (7 November 1884, Melbourne, Iowa – 24 November 1965, Lawrence, Kansas) was an American mathematician specializing in projective differential geometry. Biography Stouffer received bachelor's and master's degrees from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1911 he received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign under Ernest Julius Wilczynski with thesis ''Invariants of Linear Differential Equations, with Applications to Ruled Surfaces in Five-Dimensional Space''. Stouffer became at the University of Kansas in 1914 assistant professor, in 1917 associate professor and in 1921 full professor. In 1922 he also became dean of the Graduate School. Martin Luther Stouffer Jr. (born September 5, 1948), is the narrator and producer of the wildlife and nature documentary television program '' Wild America'' that originally aired on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the 1980s.
