''Stop the Music'' was an early Australian television series, which aired from 1956 to 1957 on Melbourne station HSV-7. The station began broadcasting on 4 November 1956, and ''Stop the Music'' debuted a few days later on the 7th, along with ''Eric and Mary''. A music-based game show, ''Stop the Music'' was hosted by John Eden and also featured audience participation. The last air-date for the show was 24 April 1957, and the program was replaced the following week by the talent program ''Stairway to the Stars''. HSV (TV Station)
HSV is a television station in Melbourne, Australia. It is part of the Seven Network, one of the three main commercial television networks in Australia, its first and oldest station. It launched in time for the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne. HSV-7 is the home of AFL coverage. The HSV building (also known as 'Broadcast Centre Melbourne') was the network's operations hub, where the Master Control Room was located, controlling all metropolitan and regional feeds. Programming lineup, advertisement output, feed switching, time zone monitoring and national transmission output was previously delivered there. All Seven Network owned and operated studios had their live signals relayed there: for instance, ATN's output was fed to HSV and then transmitted via satellite or fibre optics to towers around metropolitan Sydney. ''Eric and Mary'' was an Australian television programme which aired in 1956. It was one of the earliest Australian-produced television series. It was an "informal programme with guest artists", likely an interview show, hosted by Eric Pearce (later Sir Eric) and Mary Parker. It was broadcast on Melbourne station HSV-7. The station began broadcasting on 4 November 1956, and ''Eric and Mary'' debuted a few days later on the 7th. Broadcast in a 15-minute time-slot at 7:15 PM on Wednesdays, the series had no competition in the time-slot when it debuted, as there were no other television stations in Melbourne until 19 November 1956 when ABV-2 began broadcasting. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. ''Stairway to the Stars'' was an early Australian television series that aired on Melbourne station HSV-7. The first episode aired 9 November 1956, with the series ending circa November 1958. Hosts of the series included Eric Pearce for early episodes and Geoff McComas for later episodes. Originally broadcast on Fridays, it later moved to Wednesdays. Competition in the time-slot varied. Kinescope
Kinescope , shortened to kine , also known as telerecording in Britain, is a recording of a television program on motion picture film, directly through a lens focused on the screen of a video monitor. The process was pioneered during the 1940s for the preservation, re-broadcasting and sale of television programmes before the introduction of quadruplex videotape, which from 1956 eventually superseded the use of kinescopes for all of these purposes. Kinescopes were the only practical way to preserve live television broadcasts prior to videotape. Typically, the term Kinescope can refer to the process itself, the equipment used for the procedure (a movie camera mounted in front of a video monitor, and synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate), or a film made using the process. Lost television broadcasts are mostly those early television programs which cannot be accounted for in studio archives (or in personal archives) usually because of deliberate destruction or neglect. Common reasons for loss A significant proportion of early television programming was never recorded in the first place. Early broadcasting in all genres was live and sometimes performed repeatedly. Due to there being no means to record the broadcast or, later, because the content itself was thought to have little monetary or historical value it was not deemed necessary to save it.
