Stifford
Stifford is an area and former civil parish in the town of Grays in Thurrock, Essex, England. Historically a single village, the area was broken up by the construction of the A13 in the 1900s and is now divided by the road into three communities, the urban areas of South Stifford and Stifford Clays and the small village of North Stifford. In 1931 the parish had a population of 2188. On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished to form Thurrock. Origin of name The place name Stifford is first recorded in Domesday as ''Stiforda'' and means "path ford". The ford was across the Mardyke which flows through North Stifford before joining the Thames at Purfleet. Stifford gives its name to the Stifford Clays housing estate built in the late 1950s. Stifford Clays
Stifford Clays, historically also known as Flethall and Clay's Hall, is a housing estate and ward in the Stifford area of Grays in Thurrock, Essex, England. It is situated on a 660 acre site north of central Grays and borders North Stifford and Chafford Hundred to the west, Blackshots to the east and Belhus and Orsett to the north. It had a population of 6,755 in the 2021 census. There is evidence of human settlement or occupation in what is now Stifford Clays during the Iron Age and Roman, Saxon and Medieval periods. The earliest records of Stifford Clays date to the 15th century, when it was a manorial estate held by Maurice Bruyn, who later passed it to John Clay, who gave it its name. Chafford Hundred
Chafford Hundred, or simply Chafford, is a housing development and suburb in the town of Grays in the borough of Thurrock in Essex, England. Chafford Hundred is north-west of Grays Town Centre. Its railway station serves the area and Lakeside Shopping Centre. Lakeside Shopping Centre is in West Thurrock. Chafford Hundred was built on parts of the historical parishes of Stifford and West Thurrock, Mill Lane being the border of the respective historical parishes. Mardyke (river)
The Mardyke (sometimes, but less frequently, Mar Dyke, occasionally Mardike) is a small river, mainly in Thurrock, that flows into the River Thames at Purfleet, close to the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. In part, it forms the boundary between the Essex hundreds of Barstable and Chafford. The river gives its name to the Mardyke Valley—a project aimed at increasing appreciation and usage of recreational land around the Mardyke. Location, source and tributaries The main source of the Mardyke is in Holden's Wood between Great Warley and Little Warley. It flows roughly from the source to the Tideway of the Thames at Purfleet, close to the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Grays (or Grays Thurrock) is the largest town in the borough and unitary authority area of Thurrock, in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. A13 Road (England)
The A13 is a major road in England linking Central London with east London and south Essex. Its route is similar to that of the London, Tilbury and Southend line via Rainham, Grays, Tilbury, Stanford-Le-Hope & Pitsea, and runs the entire length of the northern Thames Gateway area, terminating on the Thames Estuary at Shoeburyness. Lakeside Shopping Centre
Lakeside Shopping Centre (commonly referred to as Lakeside) is a large Out-of-town shopping centres in the United Kingdom, out-of-town shopping mall, shopping centre located in West Thurrock, Essex just beyond the eastern boundary of Greater London. It was constructed on the site of a former chalk quarry. Purfleet
Purfleet-on-Thames is a town in the Thurrock unitary authority, Essex, England. It is bordered by the A13 road to the north and the River Thames to the south and is within the easternmost part of the M25 motorway but just outside the Greater London boundary.
