Stichting Taurus
Stichting Taurus (Taurus Foundation) is a Dutch foundation which uses large herbivores grazing under natural circumstances for nature conservation. Robust cattle and horse breeds are used for this purpose. Background and practise Large herbivore species like the aurochs, wisent, elk, and wild horse play an important role in the dynamics between fauna and flora and their grazing is recognized as essential for maintaining the biodiversity in open, park-like areas. Therefore, their re-introduction into Europe's natural areas is deemed necessary, but some of these species are extinct in the wild. For these, their domesticated descendants have to be used. Stichting Taurus uses Exmoor ponies and Konik horses as large equine grazers. Galloway
Galloway ( ; sco, Gallowa; la, Gallovidia) is a region in southwestern Scotland comprising the counties of Scotland, historic counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. Rewilding Europe
Rewilding Europe is a non-profit organisation based in Nijmegen, Netherlands, working to create rewilded landscapes throughout Europe. Their goal is to maintain and expand areas of wildlife, in a manner that has a positive impact on climate and encourages biodiversity. The group's efforts have helped in increasing the stock of previously-endangered species such as the European bison and the Iberian lynx. Rewilding Europe was formally established on 28 June 2011 as an independent, non-for-profit foundation (ANBI status) registered in the Netherlands. The four co-founders of Rewilding Europe are Frans Schepers, Staffan Widstrand, Neil Birnie and Wouter Helmer. Tauros Programme
The Tauros Programme, formerly known as TaurOs Project, is a cooperation between the Dutch foundation Stichting Taurus and universities such as the Wageningen University and Research Centre. It is an international effort to breed a type of cattle that resembles the extinct aurochs, the wild ancestor of domestic cattle. The project largely uses hardy cattle breeds with superficial resemblance to the extinct aurochs. By crossbreeding and selective breeding it tries to establish similarity to the aurochs. The long-term goal is to release these Tauros cattle into rewilding areas. The project was founded in 2008, and the actual breeding program started the following year. Tudanca Cattle
The Tudanca is a traditional Spanish breed of cattle from Cantabria, in northern Spain. Sayaguesa Cattle
The Sayaguesa is an endangered Spanish breed of domestic cattle. It is named for the comarca of Sayago in the province of Zamora, in the western part of the autonomous community of Castile and León, and is raised almost exclusively in that area. It may also be known as the Zamorana, the Moles de Sayago or the Castellana variedad Sayaguesa. It was traditionally kept mainly for draught work, but is now raised principally for meat.
