Steve Abbott (comedian)
Stephen Abbott (born 24 March 1956) is an Australian comedian and author, also known under the comedic moniker of The Sandman or occasionally Sandy. Career Abbott is an Australian comedian, actor, author, poet, screenwriter and musician. He played guitar in the band The Castanet Club together with fellow performers Glenn Butcher, Mikey Robins, Angela Moore, Maynard and long-time collaborator Warren Coleman. The band was formed in Newcastle in 1982, and members each adopted a persona for their performances, Abbott's being 'Johnny Goodman'. The Castanet Club toured all around Australia, performed at the Edinburgh Festival, and featured in the film ''The Castanet Club: A Movie You Can Dance To''. Abbott evolved his Johnny Goodman character into 'The Sandman' for Australian radio and television throughout the nineties. Steve Abbott (born 28 July 1954) is a British film producer best known for ''A Fish Called Wanda'', ''Brassed Off'', ''Fierce Creatures'' and his affiliation with the Monty Python troupe. Films he has produced have been awarded an Oscar, a Cesar, and several BAFTA awards. He was the Chairman of Bradford UNESCO City of Film. Early life and education Steve Abbott grew up in Barkerend Road in the city of Bradford, Yorkshire. He had a scholarship to the Bradford Grammar School, then took his first degree in mathematics at Cambridge with a full grant scholarship. He was an open scholar in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Abbott worked in Baird's factory for ten months, which manufactured televisions. While in Cambridge, he fell in love with cinema and foreign films. Steven Paul Abbott is an English artist manager, concert promoter, live music agent, A&R executive and arts consultant. He was formerly a songwriter and lead vocalist with punk band UK Decay from 1979 to 1983. Among other activities, he set up and curated Lutonia Literature Festival. Early life Steven Paul "Abbo" Abbott grew up on the Farley Hill Estate in Luton, England. He attended Farley Junior School, Rotheram High School and Luton VI Form College. Punk career UK Decay Abbott joined Luton punk band The Resistors in 1978, but renamed the group "UK Decay" after seeing the phrase used on the cover story of the ''Daily Mirror''. In an interview with Steve Keaton of '' Sounds'' music paper, Abbott used the term "Goth" to describe the band and has since been credited as the first to use the phrase to describe music and fashion.
