Australian Dictionary Of Biography
The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history. Initially published by Melbourne University Press in a series of twelve hard-copy volumes between 1966 and 2005, the dictionary has been published online since 2006 by the National Centre of Biography (NCB) at ANU, which has also published ''Obituaries Australia'' (OA) since 2010. History The ADB project began operating in 1957, although preparation work had been started in about 1954 at the Australian National University. Adrian Consett Stephen
Major Adrian Consett Stephen Military Cross, MC (1894 – 14 March 1918) was an Australians, Australian artillery officer and playwright. He was awarded the Military Cross during World War I. History Stephen was the second son of solicitor Consett Stephen, of the Sydney firm of Stephen, Jaques, and Stephen. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney, graduating BA in 1913 and LL.B in 1915. He enlisted in 1916 and fought in France with the Royal Field Artillery. He was mentioned in despatches in May 1917, awarded the Croix de Guerre in June 1917 for action on The Somme, then the Military Cross in October 1917 for his conduct at the Battle of Passchendaele. Colin Campbell Stephen
Sir Colin Campbell Stephen (3 May 1872 – 14 September 1937) was an Australian lawyer remembered as the longtime chairman of the Australian Jockey Club (AJC). History He was a member of the well-known Stephen family, a son of Septimus Alfred Stephen, MLC. He was educated at All Saints' College, Bathurst and, after a course of private tuition in England, was admitted as a solicitor in 1896, and was accepted as a partner in the firm of Stephen, Jaques and Stephen. He was elected a member of the AJC in 1892, and the committee in 1912, serving on the Sir Adrian Knox sub-committee which framed the rules of racing of that year. In 1933 he was tasked with formulating a set of revised rules of racing to be adopted throughout Australia.
