Stephen Metcalf is a critic-at-large and columnist at ''Slate'' magazine. He is also the host of the magazine's weekly cultural podcast the '' Culture Gabfest''. Biography Metcalf attended Phillips Exeter Academy but, "three weeks shy of graduation, was asked by the school administration, in no uncertain terms, to leave." He then matriculated at Wesleyan University, later earning a master's degree from the University of Virginia. After spending some time working on a Ph.D. in the English graduate program at Yale University, he moved to New York City where he worked as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton during her senate campaign and as a freelance writer. Subsequently, he joined Slate as a staff writer. He is Slate's "critic-at-large", writes the magazine's ''Dilettante'' column and serves as host of the magazine's culture podcast. Stephen James Metcalfe (born 9 January 1966) is a Conservative Party politician, who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Basildon and East Thurrock from 2010 to 2024. He sat on the Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee and served as chair. Early life and career Stephen Metcalfe was born on 9 January 1966 in Walthamstow, London. Before becoming an MP, Metcalfe worked in a family printing business. At the 2005 general election, Metcalfe stood as the Conservative candidate in Ilford South, coming second with 27.2% of the vote behind the incumbent Labour MP Mike Gapes. Metcalfe was previously an Epping Forest District councillor and portfolio holder for Customer Services, ICT & E-government. Stephen Metcalfe is an American film director and screenwriter. Metcalfe's career has touched on all forms of dramatic writing; screen, television and stage. Metcalfe's first produced screenplay was ''Jacknife''. Based on his Off-Broadway play, ''Strange Snow'', it starred Robert De Niro, Ed Harris and Kathy Baker and was directed by David Jones (director), David Jones. Stephen Michael Metcalf is an American lobbyist and former politician. He was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's forty-ninth Senate district, including constituents in Buncombe county. A management consultant from Asheville, North Carolina, earned degrees from Appalachian State University and the University of Tennessee in political science. He served in the United States Army as a chaplain's assistant, and was the first county manager of Buncombe County, North Carolina. Metcalf served in the administration of Governor Jim Hunt as deputy secretary of governmental operations and deputy secretary of the North Carolina Department of Transportation before being elected to the state legislature in 1998.
