The statue was gifted by the U.S. state of Ohio in 2016, and replaced one depicting William Allen, which had been donated in 1887. The statue was gifted by the U.S. state of Ohio to the National Statuary Hall Collection in 1887, but later replaced with one of Thomas Edison due to Allen's pro-slavery viewpoints. William Allen (December 18 or 27, 1803 – July 11, 1879) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a Democratic Representative, Senator and 31st governor of Ohio. Early life and family Allen was born in Edenton, North Carolina. His father waNathanial Allen (1755–1805) His mother was Fanny Coulston, an enslaved woman who was either owned by his father or had been his mistress. National Statuary Hall Collection
The National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol is composed of statues donated by individual states to honor persons notable in their history. Limited to two statues per state, the collection was originally set up in the old Hall of the United States House of Representatives, House of Representatives, which was then renamed ''National Statuary Hall''. The expanding collection has since been spread throughout the Capitol and United States Capitol Visitor Center, its visitor center. With the addition of New Mexico's second statue in 2005, the collection is now complete with 100 statues contributed by 50 states, plus two from the District of Columbia (see ''Statues of the National Statuary Hall Collection''). The National Statuary Hall is a chamber in the United States Capitol devoted to sculptures of prominent Americans. The hall, also known as the Old Hall of the House, is a large, two-story, semicircular room with a second story gallery along the curved perimeter. It is located immediately south of the Rotunda. The meeting place of the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly 50 years (1807–1857), after a few years of disuse it was repurposed as a statuary hall in 1864; this is when the ''National Statuary Hall Collection'' was established.
