State Museum For Art And Cultural History
The State Museum for Art and Cultural History (in German: ''Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte'') is an art museum consisting of three separate buildings located close to each other in the city of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. The three museum locations are: * Schloss Oldenburg (decorative arts, Local history, regional history, some old master paintings) * Augusteum ( old master painting collection) * Prinzenpalais (modern art collection) The museum was established in 1919 after the abdication the previous year of Frederick Augustus II, the last Grand Duke of Oldenburg. The initial collection consisted of the former Grand Duke's picture gallery, a collection of antiquities, and the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts and the former National Picture Gallery. Schloss Oldenburg
Schloss Oldenburg (Oldenburg palace) is a ''schloss'', or palace, in the city of Oldenburg (city), Oldenburg in the present-day state of Lower Saxony, Germany. The first castle on the site was built around 1100 and became the ancestral home of the House of Oldenburg. The present building served as residence to the counts (1667–1785), dukes (1785–1815) and grand dukes (1815–1918) of List of rulers of Oldenburg, Oldenburg. The building now houses part of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History, especially its decorative arts and local history exhibitions, as well as some old master paintings. Frederick Augustus II, Grand Duke Of Oldenburg
Frederick Augustus II (16 November 1852 in Oldenburg – 24 February 1931 in Rastede) was the last ruling Grand Duke of Oldenburg. Frederick Augustus was the eldest son of Peter II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg. He grew up with an interest in the navy and studied at multiple German universities, before serving in the navy. In 1878, he married Princess Elisabeth Anna of Prussia, daughter of Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt-Dessau and Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia. After her death in 1895, he married Elisabeth Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1896. He ascended to the Oldenburg throne in 1900 as Frederick Augustus II and funded multiple infrastructure projects, including the development of ports and waterways. The First World War broke out during his reign which saw the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg fight with the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm II on the side of the Central Powers. The Schlossgarten Oldenburg ("castle garden") is a 16-hectare public park in the city of Oldenburg (city), Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, northern Germany, located between the Eversten district and the city centre to the north. At the northwest end is a lake and Elisabeth-Anna-Palais (built 1894–1896) and close to the northwest end is the Schloss Oldenburg. History The garden is a historic park in the style of an English landscape garden. It was created on behalf of the Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg by the former court gardener Friedrich Wilhelm Julius Bosse. In 1803 and 1805, the Duke acquired meadowland near the Schloss Oldenburg to create a garden and began work on this in 1809 with detailed plans. The Duke himself worked on design drawings.
