State Bank Of South Australia
The State Bank of South Australia was a bank created in 1896 and owned by the Government of South Australia. The bank became the subject of a two-year South Australian Royal Commission upon its collapse in 1991. The surviving part of the bank now exists as BankSA. History Early history The State Bank of South Australia was founded in 1896 as the outcome of an Act of Parliament, The Advances Bill, which provided for setting up of the bank which could benefit the State's primary producers and other industries by providing loans guaranteed by the Government at preferential conditions. A Bill based on a failed Victorian proposal was introduced by the Kingston-Holder government in 1894 but lapsed, then revived with clarifications by Frederick Holder (later Sir Frederick) in 1895. Jennifer Cashmore
Jennifer Lilian Cashmore ( Adamson, 5 December 1937 – 10 June 2024) was an Australian politician. She was a Liberal Party member of the South Australian House of Assembly between 1977 and 1993, representing the eastern suburbs seat of Coles ( Morialta since 2002). Cashmore was the third woman to be elected to the House of Assembly. Cashmore served as Minister for Health and Minister for Tourism during the 1979–1982 Tonkin government, the first woman member of Cabinet since Joyce Steele. In 1992 she contested the leadership of her party against John Olsen and Dean Brown, the eventual winner. Once dubbed the 'green conscience' of the Liberal Party, Cashmore was the first member to raise questions about the financial viability of the State Bank before the 1989 election. The South Australian Liberal Party, officially known as the Liberal Party of Australia (South Australian Division), and often shortened to SA Liberals, is the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia. 1989 South Australian State Election
State elections were held in South Australia on 25 November 1989. All 47 seats in the South Australian House of Assembly were up for election. The incumbent Australian Labor Party led by Premier of South Australia John Bannon defeated the Liberal Party of Australia led by Leader of the Opposition John Olsen. Labor won 22 out of 47 seats, and secured a majority of 24 with the support of two Independent Labor members. Background Parliamentary elections for both houses of the Parliament of South Australia were held in South Australia in 1989. John Bannon's Labor government had initially presided over an economic boom, but at the time of the election the economy had slowed due to the late 1980s recession. RAA Place (formerly Westpac House, Santos House, BankSA Building, and State Bank Building) is an office building located at 91 King William Street, Adelaide. It is a 31-storey office tower, reaching at its roof, with each level approximately in height. From 1988 until 2019, it was the tallest building in Adelaide. The building was originally built for the State Bank of South Australia and known as the State Bank building, after the 1991 State Bank Collapse renamed to reflect the bank's new name, BankSA. It was purchased by Santos and renamed in February 1997. From 2007 to 2022, after Westpac acquired BankSA, it was known as Westpac House. In December 2022, RAA purchased naming rights to the tower. The Savings Bank of South Australia was a bank founded in the colony of South Australia in 1848, based in Adelaide. In the early 20th century it established a presence in schools by setting up a special category of savings accounts for schoolchildren, and grew through the following decades. In 1984 it merged with the State Bank of South Australia, with the merged entity taking the latter name. This entity later became known as BankSA, and is a division and a trading name of St George Bank, which is a subsidiary of Westpac.
