Stanton, Suffolk
Stanton is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk (district), West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England, about nine miles north-east of Bury St Edmunds, on the A143 road to Diss, Norfolk, Diss. Close to the village lies the former WW II airfield RAF Shepherds Grove, where American forces were based. One of the main landmarks in the village is the fine restored windmill at Upthorpe Farm, to the east of the village. The name " Stanton" means 'a homestead on stony ground'. Stanton St Bernard is a village and civil parish in the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire, England. Its nearest town is Devizes, about away to the west. The parish is tall and narrow, extending north onto the Marlborough Downs where it includes Milk Hill, the highest point in Wiltshire. History Evidence of prehistoric activity in the area includes earthworks on Milk Hill. The Wansdyke early medieval earthwork crosses the north of the parish. The boundaries of the parish were defined in Saxon times and remain largely unchanged. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded 46 households at ''Stantone'', held by Wilton Abbey, within Swanborough hundred. The manor continued to be held by the abbey until its dissolution in 1539. Stanton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,348 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Montcalm County. History Stanton was organized in 1860 when the people of Montcalm County voted to move the county seat here from Greenville, which had been the original county seat since 1840. At that time, the County Board purchased from Fred Hall of Ionia and named the location "Fred" in his honor. The family of Levi Camburn was the first to settle here, and he became its first postmaster on March 10, 1862. The city was renamed for U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in 1863. History The first post office to be located in present-day Stanton was established on July 7, 1849, and was named Beaver Pond, because of the settlement's proximity to a small body of water resulting from a beaver dam. Stanton upon Hine Heath is a village and parish in Shropshire, England. The River Roden flows through the village. Author Mary Webb (1881–1927) lived with her parents in Stanton from 1896 to 1902, at house then called The Woodlands, later called Harcourt Manor.
