Stack-based Virtual Machines
Stack-oriented programming is a programming paradigm that relies on one or more stacks to manipulate data and/or pass parameters. Programming constructs in other programming languages need to be modified for use in a stack-oriented system. Most stack-oriented languages operate in ''postfix'' or Reverse Polish notation: arguments or parameters for a command are listed before that command. For example, postfix notation would be written instead of (''prefix'' or Polish notation), or ( ''infix'' notation). The programming languages Forth, Factor, RPL, PostScript, BibTeX style design language and many assembly languages fit this paradigm. Stack-based algorithms manipulate data by popping data from and pushing data to the stack. Operators govern how the stack manipulates data. In computer programming, a precondition is a condition or predicate that must always be true just prior to the execution of some section of code or before an operation in a formal specification. If a precondition is violated, the effect of the section of code becomes undefined and thus may or may not carry out its intended work. Return-oriented programming (ROP) is a computer security exploit technique that allows an attacker to execute code in the presence of security defenses such as executable-space protection and code signing. In this technique, an attacker gains control of the call stack to hijack program control flow and then executes carefully chosen machine instruction sequences that are already present in the machine's memory, called "gadgets". Lexical tokenization is conversion of a text into (semantically or syntactically) meaningful ''lexical tokens'' belonging to categories defined by a "lexer" program. In computer programming, specifically when using the imperative programming paradigm, an assertion is a predicate (a Boolean-valued function over the state space, usually expressed as a logical proposition using the variables of a program) connected to a point in the program, that always should evaluate to true at that point in code execution.
