St. Philomena's Roman Catholic Church
The original St. Philomena's Roman Catholic Church was built in 1875 at a cost of $2,300 on a lot adjoining the Free Methodist Church in the village where the parish hall stands today. St. Philomena's congregation then built a new church in 1964 on Plymouth Avenue in Franklinville, NY; although it had actually been in use since Christmas of 1964, a formal dedication was held May 16, 1965. The resident priest at the time was the Rev. Henry J. Romanowski. When he died some years later in 1985, he was buried in the flowerbed by the statue in front of the church. Today the parish hall is still in use on Mill St. where the parish holds many events, functions, and parties. The new church features stained glass windows, the Stations of the Cross, and the statue of St. Philomena which were all executed by Larry Griffis, Buffalo artist and sculptor. Franklinville is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2020 census. Franklinville is an interior town, located in the northeast quadrant of the county. Franklinville is also the name of a village in the town. History The town was first settled around 1806 by Joseph McCluer and known then as McCluer Settlement. The Town of Hebe was established in 1812 from the town of Olean, at the time the only town in the county, and consisted of the entire northern half of the county. Philomena
Philomena ( ), also known as Saint Philomena (; ) or Philomena of Rome ( 10 January 291 10 August 304) was a virgin (title)#Virgin martyrs, virgin martyr whose remains were discovered on May 24–25, 1802, in the Catacomb of Priscilla. Three tiles enclosing the tomb bore an inscription, (i.e. "Peace be unto you, Philomena"), that was taken to indicate that her name (in the Latin of the inscription) was ''Filumena'' (), the English form of which is ''Philomena''. Philomena is the patron saint of infants, babies, and youth, and is known as "The Wonderworker". The remains were moved to Mugnano del Cardinale in 1805. There, they became the focus of widespread devotion; several miracles were credited to Philomena's intercession, including the healing of Pauline Jaricot in 1835, which received wide publicity. Griffis Sculpture Park
Griffis Sculpture Park is a sculpture park located between Ashford Hollow and East Otto in Cattaraugus County, New York. The outdoor art museum, which was created by artist Larry W. Griffis Jr in 1966, was the first sculpture park in the United States. It features more than 250 works of art created by over 100 artists, and also serves as a nature preserve, with of trails. Griffis founded the Ashford Hollow Foundation for the Visual and Performing Arts to administer the park, which was most recently headed by Simon Griffis, son of Larry Griffis, until Simon's death at Zoar Valley in June 2010. Other members of the Griffis family have also served on the AHF board of directors. The park draws 35,000 visitors annually. Admission is $5 per person, which is paid on a volunteer basis with QR codes (PayPal or Venmo) scannable near the entrance to the park.
