St. Paul's Cathedral (painting)
''St. Paul's Cathedral'' is a 1754 oil painting by the Italian artist Canaletto. Painted towards the end of his stay in England, the Venetian artist produced a veduta featuring St. Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. While St Paul's had featured in the distance of many of his paintings of the River Thames, this was the only close-up view of the cathedral he produced. It is shown from the north-west with the marble Statue of Queen Anne visible on the right. The painting once belonged to John Hay who served as American Ambassador to Britain and Secretary of State. Canaletto
Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto (), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Painter of cityscapes or '' vedute'', of Venice, Rome, and London, he also painted imaginary views (referred to as capricci), although the demarcation in his works between the real and the imaginary is never quite clearcut.Alice Binion and Lin Barton. In the period from 1746 to 1756, he worked in England, where he painted many views of London and other sites, including Warwick Castle and Alnwick Castle. John Hay
John Milton Hay (October 8, 1838July 1, 1905) was an American statesman and official whose career in government stretched over almost half a century. Beginning as a Secretary to the President of the United States, private secretary for Abraham Lincoln, he became a diplomat. He served as United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Hay was also a biographer of Lincoln, and wrote poetry and other literature throughout his life. Born in Salem, Indiana to an anti-slavery family that moved to Warsaw, Illinois, Hay showed great potential from an early age, and his family sent him to Brown University. After graduation in 1858, Hay read law in his uncle's office in Springfield, Illinois, adjacent to that of Lincoln. Hay worked for Lincoln's 1860 United States presidential election, successful presidential campaign and became one of his private secretaries in the White House.
