St. Louis Gateway Mall
The Gateway Mall in St. Louis, Missouri is an open green space running linearly, one block wide, from the Gateway Arch at Memorial Drive to St. Louis Union Station, Union Station at 20th Street. Located in the city's downtown, it runs between Market Street (St. Louis), Market Street and Chestnut Street (St. Louis), Chestnut Street. In the early 21st century, there are plans to remodel areas of the mall for additional uses and to make it more attractive to visitors. City planners hope to incorporate the many downtown locations into one mall area. History Early history The Mall began as part of the ''Comprehensive Plan'' of 1907, which embraced City Beautiful principles held by members of the City Plan Commission. It usually contains of one or more dominant public buildings, which may also include a government building. Recently, the term "civic center" has been used in reference to an entire central business district of a community or a major shopping center in the middle of a community. In this type of civic center, special attention is paid to the way public structures are grouped and landscaped. Carl Milles
Carl Milles (; 23 June 1875 – 19 September 1955) was a Swedes, Swedish sculpture, sculptor. He was married to artist Olga Milles (née Granner) and brother to Ruth Milles and half-brother to the architect Evert Milles. Carl Milles sculpted the Gustaf Vasa statue at the Stockholm Nordic Museum, the Poseidon statue in Gothenburg, the Orpheus group outside the Stockholm Concert Hall, and the Fountain of Faith in Falls Church, Virginia. His home near Stockholm, Millesgården, became his resting place and is now a museum. Biography He was born as Carl Wilhelm Emil Andersson, son of lieutenant August Emil Sebastian "Mille" Andersson (1843–1910) and his wife Walborg Alfhild Maria Tisell (1846–1879), at Knivsta Municipality, Lagga outside Uppsala in 1875. 4th Street is a street in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It starts at Avenue D as East 4th Street and continues to Broadway, where it becomes West 4th Street. It continues west until the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue), where West 4th Street turns north and confusingly intersects with West 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Streets in Greenwich Village. Most of the street has the same width between curbstones as others in the prevailing street grid, striped as two curbside lanes and one traffic lane, with one-way traffic eastbound. Henry Kiel
Henry W. Kiel (February 21, 1871 – November 26, 1942) was the 32nd Mayor of Saint Louis, serving from 1913 to 1925. Early life Henry W. Kiel's father was Henry F. Kiel, a well known contractor, who died in 1908. Henry F. Kiel also served as a private in the Civil War. Henry W. Kiel's mother was Mrs. Minnie C. Kiel, who died in 1879. Kiel grew up in St. Louis and attended St. Louis Public Schools and the Smith Academy. He studied architecture for a year after completing his academic studies. Kiel had a knack for mechanical structure and had an apprenticeship to the bricklayer's trade, under the direction of his father.
