Sri Lankan Tamils In Sinhala Cinema
Tamil cinema in Sri Lanka is not as developed as Sinhala cinema or its Indian counterpart, the Tamil cinema of Kodambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is especially due to the high production rates of the influential commercial Tamil films from Tamil Nadu, India and the long run ethnic civil war in Sri Lanka. Tamils contributed significantly to Sinhala cinema as well as Indian Tamil cinema, also known as ''Kollywood''. Only a few Tamil language films were produced in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Earlier Tamil movies produced were all most destroyed or unrecovered due to civil war. Producers and directors * S. M. Nayagam, a Sri-Lankan Tamil of Indian origin, was the first producer of a Sinhala film ''Kadawunu Poronduwa'' (roughly translated as "Broken Promise"), which was produced in 1947. Cinema Of Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan cinema encompasses the Sri Lankan film industry. It is a fledgling industry that has struggled to find a footing since its inauguration in 1947 with '' Kadawunu Poronduwa'' produced by S. M. Nayagam of Chitra Kala Movietone. Sri Lankan films are usually made in Sinhala and Tamil languages, the dominant languages of the country. Cinema of Sri Lanka is also referred to as Follywood as many famous Sri Lankan actors had surnames starting with an "F." In the first nine years, most films were made in neighboring Southern India and closely followed the conventions of Indian cinema. Studio shooting was the norm, with Indian style sets erected in film studios. Titus Thotawatte
Thotawattege Don Manuel Titus de Silva ( Sinhala:ටයිටස් තොටවත්ත), popularly as Titus Thotawatte, was a Sri Lankan director and editor who made several popular Sri Lankan action movies in the 1960s and 1970s and later developed Sinhala children's programmes. Thotawatte died on 15 October 2011 in Colombo. Early life He was born on 17 April 1927 in Colombo. He was the fourth child in a family of five children, with 3 elder brothers and one younger sister. He attended Ananda College in Colombo and studied art under J.D.A. Perera and Stanley Abeysinghe and Matara Technical College. Career Thottawatte joined Lester James Peries and Willie Blake as editor to make ''Rekava'' in 1956. It was an attempt to make a truly Sinhalese movie in contrast with the Southern Indian copies then in vogue. Thottawatte debuted as a director with '' Chandiya'' in 1965. Niranjani Shanmugaraja also known as Niranjani Shanmugarajah ( ta, நிரஞ்சனி சண்முகராஜா, si, නිරන්ජණි ශණ්මුගරාජා) is a Sri Lankan award-winning actress in Sri Lankan Sinhalese and Tamil Cinema. ''Matha'' ( si, මාතා) is a 2012 Sri Lankan Sinhala and Tamil romantic war film directed by Boodee Keerthisena and co-produced by Ruwan Jayasingha, Sanath Ranaweera and Vijaya Rathnayake. It stars Darshan Dharmaraj and Yasodha Radhakrishnan in lead roles along with Thumindu Dodantenna and Raja Ganeshan. Music composed by Lakshman Joseph De Saram. Darshan Dharmaraj ( ta, தர்ஷன் தர்மராஜ், si, දර්ශන් ධර්මරාජ්; 2 March 1981 – 2 October 2022) was a Sri Lankan actor in film, theatre and television. He made his first television appearance through the Sidney Chandrasekara's teledrama ''A9''. He was awarded Best Actor Awards at several Film festivals in Sri Lanka for his portrayal as ex-LTTE cadre in Asoka Handagama's movie ''Ini Avan'' (2012). Early life and education Dharmaraj was born in Rakwana, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. He completed education from St. John's Tamil College. Shayama Ananda ( Sinhala:ශ්යාමා ආනන්ද), popularly known as Shayama Ananda, is an actress in Sri Lankan Sinhala cinema. Personal life Shayama was born on 24 December in Colombo as the elder daughter. Her father M. S. Ananda was a renowned cinematographer, director and producer. Her mother Violet Ananda was also a film producer. Sri Lankan Chetties (, ) also known as Colombo Chetties, is an ethnicity in the island of Sri Lanka. Formerly considered a Sri Lankan Tamil caste, they were classified as a separate ethnic group in the 2001 census.
