''Sportsnight'' was a midweek BBC television sports programme that ran from 1968 until 1997. Sportsview ''Sportsnight'' was a successor to ''Sportsview'' which started on 8 April 1954. ''Sportsview'' was devised by Paul Fox, later Controller of BBC1 and Peter Dimmock was the original host for a decade (and did host occasional editions from 1964 to 1968). The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award evolved as a spin-off from ''Sportsview'' when the last show of its inception year featured the ''Sports Review of 1954''. Frank Bough took over as main host in 1964 and ''Sportsview'' was replaced by ''Sportsnight with Coleman'' from 12 September 1968. A junior version of ''Sportsview'' also ran from 1956 to 1962. Peter Dimmock
Peter Harold Moss Dimmock (6 December 1920 – 20 November 2015) was a British sports broadcaster, television producer and television executive for the BBC. He began his career as a racing correspondent for the PA Media, Press Association before joining the BBC as a producer and commentator at their Outside Broadcasts television department, working on almost 2,000 outside broadcasts. Dimmock was the first host of the BBC's long-running ''Grandstand (TV programme), Grandstand'' and of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, BBC Sports Review of the Year awards and the weekly live sports programme ''Sportsnight, Sportsview'' from 1954 to 1964. BBC Sports Personality Of The Year
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is an awards ceremony that takes place annually in December. Devised by Paul Fox in 1954, it originally consisted of just a single award of the same name. Several new awards have been introduced, and currently eight awards are presented. The first awards to be added were the Team of the Year and Overseas Personality awards, which were introduced in 1960. A Lifetime Achievement Award was first given in 1995 and again in 1996, and has been presented annually since 2001. In 1999, three more awards were introduced: the Helen Rollason Award, the Coach Award, and the Newcomer Award, which was renamed to Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2001. Frank Bough
Francis Joseph Bough (; 15 January 1933 – 21 October 2020) was an English television presenter. He was best known as the host of BBC sports and current affairs shows including '' Grandstand'', '' Nationwide'' and '' Breakfast Time'', which he launched alongside Selina Scott and Nick Ross. Over his broadcasting career, Bough became known for his smooth, relaxed and professional approach to live broadcasts, once being described as "the most unassailable performer on British television". In 1987, Michael Parkinson said, "If my life depended on the smooth handling of a TV show, Bough would be my first choice to be in charge." Sir Paul Leonard Fox (27 October 1925 – 8 April 2024) was a British television executive, who spent much of his broadcasting career working for BBC Television, most prominently as the Controller of BBC One, BBC1 between 1967 and 1973. Early life Paul Leonard Fox was born on 27 October 1925, in Germany to Jewish parents. After the early death of his father, he came to the UK on a kindertransport in 1938. He was educated in Bournemouth and served in the Parachute Regiment (United Kingdom), Parachute Regiment from 1943 to 1946. Fox married, in 1948, Betty Nathan, who died in 2009. David Coleman
David Robert Coleman (26 April 1926 – 21 December 2013) was a British sports commentator and television presenter who worked for the BBC for 46 years. He covered eleven Summer Olympic Games from 1960 to 2000 and six FIFA World Cups from 1962 to 1982. Coleman presented some of the BBC's leading sporting programmes, including ''Grandstand'' and ''Sportsnight'' (originally titled ''Sportsnight with Coleman'' until 1972), and was the host of ''A Question of Sport'' for 18 years.
