Sports in Peru are popular and widespread. Football Football is the most popular sport in Peru, and the Peru national football team have competed in the FIFA World Cup five times. * 1930 * 1970 (Quarterfinals) * 1978 (Quarterfinals) * 1982 * 2018 The national team has also won two Copa América trophies: 1939 and 1975. At the club level there are significant achievements such as the Cienciano championships in the 2003 Copa Sudamericana and in the 2004 Recopa Sudamericana. The Simon Bolivar Cup won by Defensor Lima and Alianza Lima in 1974 and 1976 respectively, in addition to the Copa Libertadores U-20 championship won by Universitario de Deportes in 2011. Defensor Lima
Club Atlético Defensor Lima is a Perúvian football club located in the district of Breña, Lima. The club was founded on July 31, 1931. The club plays in the Liga Distrital de Cercado de Lima, which is the seventh division of the Peruvian league. History The club was the 1973 Torneo Descentralizado champion. Lima Cricket & Football Club is a Peruvian professional sports club based in the country's capital city of Lima. Lima Cricket claims to be both the oldest cricket club in South America, and the oldest association football-practising club in Peru and the Americas, having been founded in 1859 by the city's British community. The 2011 U-20 Copa Libertadores (known as the 2011 Copa Movistar Libertadores Sub-20 for sponsorship reasons) was the first edition of this U-20 club competition. Players born on or after 1 January 1990 were eligible to compete.
