Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should c ...

Splendrillia Aoteana
''Splendrillia aoteana'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Drilliidae. This species has also been found a fossil in Pliocene Strata of New Zealand. This name was in 1930 introduced by Finlay as a nomen novum pro ''Pleurotoma laevis'' Hutton, 1873a, non ''Pleurotoma laevis'' Bellardi, 1847. Description The length of the shell attains 18 mm, its diameter 7 mm. (Original description) The solid shell has a claviform shape. It is axially costate, with a pinkish spiral band. The sculpture consists of oblique rounded and strong axial ribs, beginning at the angle of the shoulder, and extending to the suture below. On the body whorl they are obsolete on the base. Their number is about 14 on a whorl. The whole surface, and especially the interstices, are very distinctly striated by fine flexuous growth lines, crescent-shaped on the smooth depression of the shoulder. The microscopic spiral lines are sometimes visible on the shoulder, and, a ...
