HMSAS Spindrift
SAS Skilpad was a mine-layer vessel of the South African Navy during and after the Second World War. She was launched as the German trawler ''Polaris'' and after being captured by the Allies in 1940, she was commissioned into the Royal Navy as a war-prize and named HMS ''Spindrift''. During the course of the war she was transferred to the South African Naval Forces, being based in Saldanha Bay and later in Durban. After being kept in storage for several years after the end of the war, she sank at her moorings in Durban during a gale in 1953, leading to her being decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1957. History ‘’Polaris’’ was built in Germany in 1936 as a general purpose trawler and was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1939 and converted into a lookout trawler. She was then fitted with concealed torpedo tubes and the Kriegsmarine added super heaters to the boilers to improve speed for short "sprints" as may be needed. Lady Florence Cray
Lady Florence Craye is a recurring fictional character who appears in P. G. Wodehouse's comedic Jeeves stories and novels. An intellectual and imperious young woman, she is an author who gets engaged at different times to various characters, each failing to perform a difficult task for her or to meet her high standards. She is one of the women to whom the hapless Bertie Wooster repeatedly finds himself reluctantly engaged, a situation from which he must be rescued by Jeeves. Prototype An early version of Florence Craye appears in the Reggie Pepper story "Disentangling Old Percy" (1912), in which Florence has the same domineering personality. She has two younger brothers who are both old enough to be married, one ten years younger than she is, Edwin, and the other sixteen years younger than she, Percy (or Douglas). This early Florence appears to be a prototype for the later character, since in the Jeeves stories, Florence is a young woman, and Edwin, her only known sibling, is ... Nanda Devi
Nanda Devi is the second-highest mountain in India, after Kangchenjunga, and the highest located entirely within the country (Kangchenjunga is on the border of India and Nepal). It is the 23rd-highest peak in the world. Nanda Devi was considered the highest mountain in the world before computations in 1808 proved Dhaulagiri to be higher. It was also the highest mountain in India until 1975, when Sikkim, an independent kingdom until 1948 and a protectorate of India thereafter, became a part of the Republic of India. It is located in Chamoli Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, between the Rishiganga valley on the west and the Goriganga valley on the east. The peak, whose name means "Bliss-Giving Goddess", is regarded as the patron goddess of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas. In acknowledgment of its religious significance and for the protection of its fragile ecosystem, the Government of India declared the peak as well as the circle of high mountains surrounding it—the N ... Spindrift (novel)
''Spindrift'' is a 2007 science fiction novel by American writer Allen Steele. ''Spindrift'' is set within the same universe as the ''Coyote'' trilogy but was written as a stand-alone novel. Steele has stated that he wrote ''Spindrift'' because he was "tired of the militaristic sort of space opera that says that any contact between humans and aliens will necessarily be hostile". Plot summary In 2288 A.D. Jared Ramirez is serving a life sentence on the moon for his role in an attempt to reduce the human population by one-third. A telescopic array that he designed and programmed has received a transmission that is clearly alien. John Shillinglaw, Associate Director of the European Space Agency arranges for him to be a member of the science team aboard the spaceship ''Galileo'' which will explore the source of the transmission, an object that has been dubbed "Spindrift". Ted Harker is the efficient, respected first officer of the ''Galileo''. He serves under Ian Lawrence, the a ...
