The Speaker pro tempore () is an officer and second-highest ranking member of the Senate of Canada. The Speaker Pro Tempore ("acting Speaker") is a member of the Senate who is first nominated by a selection committee. The nomination is then confirmed through a vote in the Senate. The Speaker Pro Tempore serves whenever the Speaker of the Senate of Canada, who is appointed by the government, is unable to attend a sitting of the Senate. Pierrette Ringuette
Pierrette Ringuette (born December 31, 1955), also formerly known as Pierrette Ringuette-Maltais, is a Canadian politician. Ringuette, a businesswoman and professor, was the first francophone woman to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. She sat in the body as a member of the New Brunswick Liberal Party beginning in 1987, and resigned her seat once she was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). She was succeeded by her predecessor, Percy Mockler, in a provincial by-election in 1993. In the 1993 federal election, she won a seat in the House of Commons of Canada as the Liberal MP for Madawaska—Victoria by defeating Progressive Conservative Cabinet Minister Bernard Valcourt. Rose-Marie Losier-Cool
Rose-Marie Losier-Cool (born June 18, 1937) is a retired Canadian Senator for New Brunswick. A member of New Brunswick's Acadian community, Losier-Cool worked as a teacher for thirty-three years, two decades of which were spent at ''École secondaire Népisiguit'' in Bathurst, New Brunswick. She was elected the first woman president of the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick in 1983 and has sat on the board of directors of the Canadian Teachers' Federation. The president pro tempore of the United States Senate (often shortened to president pro tem) is the second-highest-ranking official of the United States Senate, after the Vice President of the United States, vice president. According to Article One of the United States Constitution, Article One, Section Three of the United States Constitution, the vice president of the United States is the Presiding Officer of the United States Senate, president of the Senate (despite not being a senator), and the Senate must choose a president ''pro tempore'' to act in the vice president's absence. The Independent Senators Group (ISG; ) is a parliamentary group in the Senate of Canada. Established on March 10, 2016, the Independent Senators Group is committed to a non-partisan Senate and the modernization of the Upper House of Canada's Parliament. Nicole Marie Eaton (''née'' Courtois; born January 21, 1945) is a former Canadian politician and a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada. Leonidas Housakos (born January 10, 1968) is a Canadian politician who has served as the senator for Wellington, Quebec since January 8, 2009. Pierre Claude Nolin (October 30, 1950 – April 23, 2015) was a Canadian politician and senator. A prominent member of the Conservative Party of Canada from 2004 until his death, he became an influential figure in the Party's parliamentary caucus. This is a list of past and present members of the Senate of Canada representing the province of Nova Scotia. There are nine senators currently appointed with one vacancy. Donald Oliver
Donald H. Oliver (born November 16, 1938) is a Canadian lawyer, developer and politician. Appointed by former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Oliver served in the Senate of Canada from 1990 until 2013. He was the first black male to sit in the Senate and the second black Canadian appointed to the chamber. A lawyer and real estate developer, Oliver is a member of Nova Scotia's black minority.
