South Denver
South Denver was an incorporated city in Colorado incorporated in 1886 and annexed by Denver in 1894. Covering almost 12 square miles that included the former site of Montana City, the South Denver community was established by James Fleming in 1881 as an alcohol-free community. Potato farmer Rufus "Potato" Clark led a group which donated land to allow the University of Denver to relocate to the area and escape the "moral and environmental pollution" of Denver. Incorporated as a town to enable the community to enforce vice laws, its anti-alcohol regulations surviving the city's dissolution. John Evans, the former Colorado governor, contributed to the community's development by fostering the establishment of the two Methodist-organized subdivisions of University Park Colony and Evanston. Henry White Warren
Henry White Warren (1831–1912) was an American Methodist Episcopal bishop and author. William Fairfield Warren was his brother. Biography Henry White Warren was born at Williamsburg, Massachusetts on January 4, 1831. He graduated in 1853 at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn. He taught ancient languages at Wilbraham Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, Mass. (1853–55), and then entered the New England Conference (1855). On April 6, 1855, he married Miss Diantha Kilgore, in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1863 he was a member of the Massachusetts Legislature. His wife died June 21, 1867, after having borne three children: Carrie, Henry and Ellen. After serving churches about Boston he was transferred to the Philadelphia Conference (1871) and was elected Bishop (1880). When he visited Colorado for the first time in 1879 he met the widow of John Wesley Iliff, Elizabeth Iliff. They were married on December 27, 1883, in the Evans Memorial Chapel. Rocky Mountain News
The ''Rocky Mountain News'' (nicknamed the ''Rocky'') was a daily newspaper published in Denver, Colorado, from April 23, 1859, until February 27, 2009. It was owned by the E. W. Scripps Company from 1926 until its closing. the Monday–Friday circulation was 255,427. From the 1940s until 2009, the newspaper was printed in a tabloid format. Under the leadership of president, publisher, and editor John Temple, the ''Rocky Mountain News'' had won four Pulitzer Prizes since 2000. Most recently in 2006, the newspaper won two Pulitzers, in Feature Writing and Feature Photography. The paper's final issue appeared on Friday, February 27, 2009, less than two months shy of its 150th anniversary. Joseph Lowe
Joseph Lowe (c. 1845-1899), aka "Rowdy Joe" Lowe, was a gambler and Western saloon, saloon keeper/owner of the Old West. Although sometimes described as a gunfighter, he did not historically fit into that category. Originally from Illinois, Lowe and his wife Katherine, aka "Rowdy Kate", moved to Kansas following the American Civil War, Civil War. The couple relocated to Newton, Kansas in 1871 and opened a tavern and brothel there. Kate sneaked off to a rival brothel in 1872 with a shooter. Joe found out and shot the man. The controversy forced the pair to relocate to the Wichita, Kansas, Wichita area where they bought another saloon in Delano, Wichita, Kansas, Delano, Kansas. This business venture that at first was extremely profitable. On October 27, 1873, Lowe shot and killed fellow saloon owner Ed Beard, Edward "Red" Beard after Beard stormed into his saloon shooting at one of Lowe's "girls".
