Sonoma County wine refers to the viticulture and winemaking in Sonoma County, California, Sonoma County, California, United States. Rockpile AVA
Rockpile is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in northern-most area of Sonoma County, California overlapping the northwestern corner of Dry Creek Valley appellation and adjacent to the southwestern shores of Lake Sonoma on the southern Mendocino Range. It was established on February 27, 2002 as the Sonoma County's 12th appellation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Treasury after reviewing the petition submitted by Jack W. Florence Sr. on behalf of the Rockpile Appellation Committee, proposing a viticultural area named "Rockpile." Gamay Noir
Gamay () is a purple-colored grape variety used to make red wines, most notably grown in Beaujolais and in the Loire Valley around Tours. Its full name is Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc. It is a very old cultivar, mentioned as long ago as the 15th century. It has been often cultivated because it makes for abundant production; however, it can produce wines of distinction when planted on acidic soils, which help to soften the grape's naturally high acidity.
