Songs For Japan
''Songs for Japan'' is a charity compilation album created to benefit relief efforts for the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. A collaborative project between the music industry's "big four" record labels ( EMI, Sony, Universal, and Warner), the album was released through the iTunes Store on March 25, 2011 through Universal. Royalties for the songs featured on the album were waived so that all proceeds could be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society. A physical album was released on April 4, 2011 through Sony. Reception Although ''Songs for Japan'' received praise for its charitable purpose it was criticized for being a compilation of already released songs, with the exception of Lady Gaga's remixed " Born This Way". This is unlike past charity albums such as '' Hope for Haiti Now'' that have included original music and performances. ''Hope for Haiti Now'' is a live album by various artists to benefit Hope for Haiti Now's campaign to alleviate the 2010 Haiti earthquake. All benefits from the album sales go to Haiti relief organizations, including the Red Cross and Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti foundation. ''Hope for Haiti Now'' features 19 live performances from the television broadcast '' Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief'' as well as the studio version of " Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)", an original track performed by Jay-Z, Bono, The Edge and Rihanna during the telethon. The digital-only album was made available for pre-order through iTunes on January 22, 2010. It set a record as the biggest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history. The album sold 171,000 copies in its first weekend, and, in merely two days, became the first digital-only album to top the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart. "Shelter from the Storm" is a song by Bob Dylan, recorded on September 17, 1974, and released on his 15th studio album, '' Blood on the Tracks'', in 1975. It was later anthologized on the compilation album ''The Essential Bob Dylan'' in 2000. Composition and recording Dylan recorded five takes of the song on September 17, 1974 at A&R Recording in New York City, with the fifth take the one that was included on '' Blood on the Tracks''. Dylan sang, and played guitar and harmonica, accompanied by Tony Brown on bass. Both Robert Shelton and Oliver Trager describe the song's narrator's mood as "tempest-tossed", with Shelton saying that the song explores a "search for salvation through love" and has similarities to the work of W. B. Yeats, and Trager interpreting it as the narrator "taking stock of himself, the dangerous world around him, and his lost love". The song was written about Burmese academic Aung San Suu Kyi, who was the chairperson of the National League for Democracy and was placed under house arrest from 1989 until 2010 for her pro-democracy activities, which led to the song being banned in Burma.
