Anti-folk
Anti-folk (sometimes spelled antifolk) is a music genre that emerged in the 1980s in New York City, founded by the musician, author and comedian Lach, as a reaction to the commercialization of folk music. It is characterized by its DIY ethos, unconventional songwriting, and often humorous or satirical lyrics. Antifolk music was made to mock the perceived seriousness of the era's mainstream music scene, and artists aim to protest with their mocking and clever lyrics. History In the United States Antifolk was introduced by artists who were unable to obtain gigs at established folk venues in Greenwich Village such as Folk City and The Speakeasy. (article in on pages 1 and 36) In the mid-1980s, singer-songwriter Lach started The Fort, an after-hours club on NYC's Rivington Street on the Lower East Side. The Fort's opening coincided with the New York Folk Festival. Because of this, Lach dubbed his event the New York Antifolk Festival. Other early proponents of the movement incl ...

Soviet Kitsch
''Soviet Kitsch'' is the major label debut and third album by American singer/songwriter Regina Spektor. It was originally released on Shoplifter Records in May 2003 but was reissued in August 2004 when Spektor signed with Sire Records. The title is drawn from Milan Kundera's expression for the vacuous aesthetics of Stalinist-style communism, a theme in his book ''The Unbearable Lightness of Being''. One version of the album was released with a bonus DVD, which included a short promotional film titled ''The Survival Guide to Soviet Kitsch'' and the music video for the song " Us." Reception "I became obsessed with ''Soviet Kitsch''," said British singer Kate Nash. "The songs are so powerful and raw. There's a track called 'Chemo Limo' where she sings about having kids. I was utterly convinced she had children of her own, but it's all made-up. That's one of the great things about her: she has a way of making you believe in what she's singing about." In 2009, the album was includ ...

Samson (Regina Spektor Song)
"Samson" is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Regina Spektor, from her albums ''Songs'' (2002) and ''Begin to Hope'' (2006). Despite having never been officially released as a single, it has charted in several countries, and is often considered one of Spektor's greatest songs. As of 2009 it has sold 143,000 copies in United States and was certified gold by the RIAA on May 15, 2025. Background and composition "Samson" was initially recorded as the first track for Spektor's second album ''Songs'', which she recorded in one take on Christmas Day 2001. In 2006, Spektor re-recorded the song for her album ''Begin to Hope'', which, unlike ''Songs'', had a major label backing. Lyrically, "Samson" references the biblical episode of Samson and Delilah, found in Judges 16. Samson was granted extraordinary physical strength by God, though his strength was held in his hair, without which he was powerless. He fell in love with Delilah, who, because of his lust for wom ...

Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)
"Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" is a song by Regina Spektor, from her 2012 album ''What We Saw from the Cheap Seats''. It was released as the album's second single on March 26, 2012. Although a handful of critics assumed this was an English-language cover version of Jacques Brel's song "Ne me quitte pas", Spektor's song is different in every way except the title. The chord structure, melody, and lyrics are all completely different. Brel's song was written in the key of A minor, in 3/4 time. It is a slow, haunting story of a man trying to win back his former lover—a song about the cowardice of men according to Brel. In contrast, Spektor's song is lively, in 4/4 time, and in a major key. Its lyrics evoke a carefree jaunt through various neighborhoods of New York City, the narrator describing all the beautiful and interesting things encountered along the way. Somehow the narrator ends up in the cafés and gardens of Paris, and the song ends with repeated declarations of ...

What We Saw From The Cheap Seats
''What We Saw from the Cheap Seats'' is the sixth studio album by American alternative singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. On November 21, 2011, Spektor posted on her Facebook page that the album had been recorded with Mike Elizondo in Los Angeles during the summer of 2011. It was released on May 29, 2012. The album is a collection of new material alongside the first studio recordings of several songs Spektor had previously only performed live. By the time of the album's release, "Jessica" was the only song that was entirely new to fans: an earlier recording of "Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" had been included on Spektor's album ''Songs'', and the rest of the songs had already been performed live, with "How" and "The Party" making their debut just weeks earlier. Singles and promotion The album's first single, " All the Rowboats", was released for streaming on February 27, 2012, and for digital download the following day. It was featured prominently on the episode of the CW' ...
