''Somethin' Serious'' is the debut solo studio album by American rapper Big Mike of the Geto Boys. It was released on June 28, 1994 via Rap-A-Lot Records. Production of the album was handled by N.O. Joe, Troy Clark, Pimp C, John Bido, Mike Dean, Crazy C and Mike B. It also features guest appearances from UGK, Scarface and Mr. 3-2. The album peaked at number 40 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart and at number 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It launched the charting single "World of Mind", which peaked at number 45 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. ''Somethin' Serious'' was certified Gold four months after release, the LP remains Big Mike's only RIAA certification. It was distributed through Rap-A-Lot Records and recorded In Dallas, Tx, Kitchen Studios. It was engineered by Jason Reed, Michael L Gipson and Jp Munchi. Michael Barnett, better known by his stage name Big Mike (born September 27, 1971) is an American rapper from the southern United States. Recording Industry Association Of America
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors that the RIAA says "create, manufacture, and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States". Rap-A-Lot is a hip hop record label co-founded by James Prince and Cliff Blodget in 1986. Smoke-a-Lot Records is a subsidiary. Rap-A-Lot was first distributed by A&M Records with the release of Raheem's 1988 debut ''The Vigilante''. The label was distributed through the 1990s by EMI's Priority Records (1991–1994), Noo Trybe Records (1994-1998), and Virgin Records (1998–2002). In the 2000s, it was distributed by Asylum Records and then Fontana Distribution. On August 22, 2013, Rap-A-Lot announced a distribution deal with RED Distribution. History The label was formed filling in a gap for recognition and promotion of southern talent especially in the Houston area. James Prince
James L. Smith (also referred to as James Prince, J. Prince, or Lil J.) (born October 31, 1965) is an American music executive, promoter and manager. He is the CEO and co-founder of the Houston based record label Rap-A-Lot. Smith and his son Jas are known for introducing Canadian rapper Drake to Lil Wayne and helping Drake sign to Young Money Entertainment in 2009. He has also managed prolific boxers such as Andre Ward, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Shakur Stevenson. Prince is known as one of the 'godfather's of the rap music industry', and inspired other southern hip hop label executives including Birdman of Cash Money Records and Master P of No Limit Records. Bernard James Freeman (born March 19, 1973), known professionally as Bun B, is an American rapper. He is best known as one half of the southern rap duo UGK (UnderGround Kingz), a group he formed in 1987 alongside Pimp C. Aside from his work with UGK, Bun B has released five solo albums, including 2010's '' Trill OG'', which received the rare 5-mic rating from '' The Source''. He is also a guest lecturer at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas. The Gap Band
The Gap Band was an American R&B and funk band that rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s. The band consisted of three brothers: Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson, along with other members; it was named after streets (Greenwood, Archer, and Pine) in the historic Greenwood neighborhood in the brothers' hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Al Green
Albert Leornes Greene (born April 13, 1946), better known as Al Green, is an American singer, songwriter, pastor and record producer best known for recording a series of soul hit singles in the early 1970s, including " Take Me to the River", " Tired of Being Alone", " I'm Still in Love with You", " Love and Happiness", and his signature song, " Let's Stay Together".
