ThSomers School Campis a Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development school camp in Somers, Victoria, Australia. History No. 1 Initial Training School The site was purchased in 1940 and Lord Somers Camp was requisitioned to form the site of the camp for No. 1 Initial Training School for the Royal Australian Air Force as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme during World War II. Recruits commenced their military service at the Initial Training School, learning fundamentals such as mathematics, navigation and aerodynamics. Post War The camp was sold in 1947 and operated as a private holiday resort. Somers is a small town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Somers recorded a population of 1,857 at the 2021 census. Somers is located in the south-eastern corner of the Mornington Peninsula, on the shores of Western Port. History Originally known as Balnarring East, the town was renamed for a popular former Governor of Victoria who set up the local Lord Somers Camp. The subdivision of Somers began in 1925, whilst the Boulevard Cafe & Post Office commenced business in 1927, the address then still being Balnarring East. Lord Somers Camp
Lord Somers Camp, or "Big Camp", is an annual week-long camp for boys and girls held in Somers, Victoria, Australia. Founded in Anglesea, Victoria, in 1929 by The 6th Baron Somers, the then Governor of Victoria, the camp has been running continuously since 1929, excluding the Second World War years of 1941-1946 when the site was occupied by the RAAF. The 2021 camps have both been postponed due to COVID-19. There are two camps, one for young men and one for young women, typically taking place in the 2nd and 3rd week of January each year. History The original camp was set up in 1929 by the then Governor of Victoria, Lord Somers. Somers aimed to duplicate the success of the hugely popular ''Duke of York Camps'' which were held in the United Kingdom.
