Solidago Capulinensis
''Solidago capulinensis'', known as the Capulin goldenrod is a rare plant endemic to Capulin Volcano National Monument and Las Animas County, Colorado and was first described and collected in 1936 by Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell and Darwin Maxson Andrews. The species was cultivated as an ornamental from the 1930's until the 1970's, but not found in the wild since the initial collection. As botanists only knew the plant from a single collected specimen, it was not included in any subsequent account of the New Mexico or United States flora. Academic interest in the species came after it was rediscovered lining a walkway at the Pueblo Colorado Nature Center in Pueblo, Colorado, which prompted a new survey within Capulin Volcano National Monument. Capulin goldenrod was subsequently found growing throughout the monument and re-identified as a rare endemic plant. It is the only known rare vascular plant species in the monument. Capulin Volcano National Monument
Capulin Volcano National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in northeastern New Mexico that protects and interprets an extinct cinder cone volcano and is part of the Raton-Clayton volcanic field. A paved road spirals gradually around the volcano and visitors can drive up to a parking lot at the rim of the extinct volcano. Hiking trails circle the rim as well as lead down into the mouth of the volcano. The monument was designated on August 9, 1916, and is administered by the National Park Service. The volcano is located north of the village of Capulin. The visitor center features exhibits about the volcano and the area's geology, natural and cultural history, and offers educational programs about volcanoes. Las Animas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,555. The county seat is Trinidad. Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell
Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell (1866–1948) was an American zoologist, born at Norwood, England, and brother of Sydney Cockerell. He was educated at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, and then studied botany in the field in Colorado in 1887–90. Subsequently, he became a taxonomist and published numerous papers on the Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Mollusca and plants, as well as publications on paleontology and evolution. Personal life Cockerell was born in Norwood, Greater London and died in San Diego, California. He married Annie Sarah Fenn in 1891 (she died in 1893) and Wilmatte Porter in 1900. In 1901, he named the ultramarine blue chromodorid ''Mexichromis porterae'' (now '' Felimare porterae'') in her honor.
