College Softball
College softball is softball as played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education, predominantly in the United States. College softball is normally played by women at the Intercollegiate level, whereas college baseball is normally played by men. As with other intercollegiate sports, most college softball in the United States is played under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Over 600 NCAA member colleges are sponsors of women's softball programs. The women's softball championships are held in Division I, Division II, and Division III. Valerie Cagle
Valerie Rose Cagle (born January 7, 2002) is an American softball pitcher and utility player for the Clemson Tigers. She was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2023. College career On December 4, 2018, Cagle signed with Clemson as part of their inaugural class for 2020. During her freshman year in 2020, Cagle started all 27 games, including a team-high 13 starts as pitcher, in a season that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She hit .376, with 10 home runs, five doubles and an ACC best 36 RBIs. She was the only freshman in the country with 10 home runs. During her redshirt freshman year in 2021, she was one of two Clemson players to start all 52 games. Clemson Tigers Softball
Clemson Tigers softball joined the Atlantic Coast Conference as a Division I varsity program in 2020. In November 2017, former Stanford coach John Rittman was named as Clemson's first head softball coach. Rittman spent the previous two years as an assistant coach at Kansas and USA Softball. History Coaching history 2020s The Tigers' first season was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The Tigers had started 19–8 overall and 5–1 in ACC play before the season was cancelled by Clemson and the ACC. The NCAA tournament was also canceled. 2021 was Clemson's first full season as a program and they finished 44–8 overall, with a 29–5 record in ACC play. In baseball, a utility player is a player who typically does not have the offensive abilities to justify a regular starting role on the team but is capable of playing more than one defensive position. These players are able to give the various starters a rest, or replace a starter due to injury, or play late in a game to provide improved defense when their team is winning.
