Social Democratic Party of Madagascar (french: Parti Social Démocrate de Madagascar et des Comores, PSD) is a political party in Madagascar. History The party was founded in 1956 in Majunga district as the Social Democratic Party of Madagascar and the Comoros. It was led by Philibert Tsiranana, a member of the French National Assembly. Tsiranana had joined the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) group, and the French SFIO government aided the construction of the PSD. The party campaigned for continued links with France in the 1958 referendum. 1972 Malagasy Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Madagascar on 30 January 1972. Incumbent President Philibert Tsiranana of the Social Democratic Party was the only candidate, and won the approval of 99.7% of voters. However, public unrest led to him handing over power to General Gabriel Ramanantsoa. Ramanantsoa put forward proposals for a five-year transition period during which the National Assembly would be suspended. The plans were approved in a referendum later in the year. The French Section of the Workers' International (french: Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière, SFIO) was a political party in France that was founded in 1905 and succeeded in 1969 by the modern-day Socialist Party. The SFIO was founded during the 1905 Globe Congress in Paris as a merger between the French Socialist Party and the Socialist Party of France in order to create the French section of the Second International, designated as the party of the workers' movement. The SFIO was led by Jules Guesde, Jean Jaurès (who quickly became its most influential figure), Édouard Vaillant and Paul Lafargue (Karl Marx's son in law), and united the Marxist tendency represented by Guesde with the social-democratic tendency represented by Jaurès.
