Smithdown (Liverpool Ward)
Smithdown ward is an electoral district of Liverpool City Council within the Liverpool Riverside and Liverpool Wavertree constituencies. History The ward was created in 1953 within the Liverpool Edge Hill constituency. The boundaries were altered in 1973 and 1980. The ward was dissolved in 2004 reinstated in 2023. 1980 Boundaries A report of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England published in November 1978 set out proposals for changes to the wards of Liverpool City Council, maintaining the number of councillors at 99 representing 33 wards. Smithdown ward was represented by three councillors. Smithdown Road
Smithdown Road is a historic street in Liverpool, England, which now forms part of the A562 road, A562. The area was previously known as Smithdown (Esmedune or Smeedon in Olde English) and dates back to 1086 when it was listed in the Domesday Book. The causeway that actually became what is now Smithdown Road emerges in documentation around 1775. It is currently the location of Toxteth Park Cemetery, Wavertree Playground and was previously the location of Sefton General Hospital, known as the Smithdown Hospital and before that the ''Old Workhouse.'' 1987 Liverpool City Council Election
Elections to Liverpool City Council were held on 7 May 1987. One third of the council was up for election on ordinary rotation; in addition there were extra vacancies in many wards caused by the disqualification of those Labour councillors who were surcharged and banned from office as part of a protest against rate-capping. As a result, the 33 wards elected a total of 59 councillors. Prior to the election the disqualification of a large part of the Labour group meant that there was a temporary administration headed by Trevor Jones of the Liberal/SDP Alliance. As a result of the election, the Labour Party regained overall control of the council, and Harry Rimmer became council leader.
