Sleep No More (2011 Play)
''Sleep No More'' was the New York City production of an immersive theatre work created by the British theatre company Punchdrunk. It was based primarily on William Shakespeare's ''Macbeth'', with additional inspiration taken from noir films (especially those of Alfred Hitchcock) and the 1697 Paisley witch trials. Its title comes from ''Macbeth'': After incarnations in London in 2003 and Brookline, Massachusetts in 2009, ''Sleep No More'' was launched in New York City in collaboration with Emursive and began performances on March 7, 2011. The production won the 2011 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and won Punchdrunk special citations at the 2011 Obie Awards for design and choreography. Punchdrunk (theatre Company)
Punchdrunk is a British theatre company formed in 2000 by Felix Barrett. The company developed a form of immersive theater, immersive theatre in which no audience member will have the same experience as another. The audience is free to choose what to watch and where to go. The format is related to Environmental theater, promenade theatre, but uses audience immersion more extensively. The company has been recognised for its unique uses of sound, light, movement and environment. Theatrical style In a typical Punchdrunk production, audience members are free to roam the performance site, which can be as large as a five-story industrial warehouse. They can either follow the performers and themes (there are usually multiple threads at any instant), or simply explore the world of the performance, treating the production as a large art installation. Manderley
Manderley is a fictional estate in Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel ''Rebecca'', owned by the character Maxim de Winter. Located in Southern England, Manderley is a typical country estate: it is filled with family heirlooms, is run by a large domestic staff and is open to the public on certain days. It is often said to be in Cornwall, as this is where the author lived, and the nearby placenames "Kerrith" and "Lanyon" are Cornish-derived; the film version is explicitly set in Cornwall.
