Sledd, Missouri
Sledd is an unincorporated community in southeast Pike County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Sledd Hall
Sledd Hall is an historic student residence building in Murphree Area on the northern edge of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. Built in 1929, the dormitory was designed by architect Rudolph Weaver in the Collegiate Gothic style. It is a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District. Sledd Hall was dedicated to the university's first president, Andrew Sledd, who served from 1905 to 1909. Sledd Of Essex
Sledd (or Sledda) was King of Essex in the late 6th century, possibly between (?) 587 - ''c''. 604. Extremely little is known about him. An East-Saxon genealogy preserved as British Library Add. MS 23211, possibly of the late 9th century, makes him a son and successor of King Æscwine. The post-Conquest historians Henry of Huntingdon (''Historia Anglorum''), Roger of Wendover (''Flores Historiarum'') and Matthew Paris (''Chronica Majora'') substitute the name Eorcenwine (''Erkenwine'', ''Erchenwine'') as his father. Though their testimony is centuries removed from Sledd's floruit, it is thought that they drew on alternative pre-Conquest material. Although Æscwine or Eorcenwine is sometimes credited with the foundation of the kingdom, genealogies included in the works of William of Malmesbury and John of Worcester (''Chronicon'' B) make Sledd the first king of Essex, while the genealogies in Add. Andrew Sledd
Andrew Warren Sledd (November 7, 1870 – March 16, 1939) was an American theologian, university professor and university president. A native of Virginia, he was the son of a prominent Methodist minister, and was himself ordained as a minister after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees. He later earned a second master's degree and his doctorate. After teaching for several years, Sledd was chosen to be the last president of the University of Florida at Lake City, from 1904 to 1905, and the first president of the modern University of Florida (first known as the "University of the State of Florida"), from 1905 to 1909. He was also president of Southern University from 1910 to 1914, and later became a professor and an influential biblical scholar at Emory University's Candler School of Theology from 1914 to 1939. Faylaka Island Attack
On October 8, 2002, two Kuwaiti citizens with ties to jihadists in Afghanistan attacked a group of unarmed United States Marines conducting a training exercise on a Kuwaiti island, killing one before being killed themselves. The attackers were reported to have served as volunteers with the Taliban in Afghanistan, prior to the U.S. invasion of that country in response to the September 11 attacks of 2001. The marines were on a training exercise on Faylaka Island, an island off the coast of Kuwait. One U.S. marine was killed and another was seriously injured. The two Kuwaiti attackers were killed after U.S. marines returned fire in self-defense. The marines' rifles were loaded with blank rounds for the training exercise, but they were able to engage their Kuwaiti attackers with their pistols.
