Slaven's Cabin
Slaven's Cabin, also called Slaven's Roadhouse and Frank Slaven Roadhouse, is a public-use facility in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska. The cabin is located on the Yukon River, southeast of Circle, Alaska, and northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Miner Frank Slaven began excavations at nearby Coal Creek in 1905 and built the roadhouse in 1932 with several friends. The roadhouse was used until the 1950s and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It also is included in the Coal Creek Historic Mining District, which is itself listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cabin was restored in 1993 for use as a visitor contact area and public use facility. A separate public-use cabin also was built in 1993 at the location. Circle, Alaska
Circle (also called Circle City; Gwichʼin language, Gwichʼin: ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2020 United States census, 2020 census the population was 91, down from 104 in 2010. Circle is northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, Fairbanks at the end of the Steese Highway along the Yukon River. Circle was named by miners in the late 19th century who believed that the town was on the Arctic Circle, but the Arctic Circle is about north of Circle. Circle used to be an active freight hub for many villages along the Yukon. Every February, Circle City hosts a checkpoint for the long-distance Yukon Quest sled dog race. There is only one general store, Hutchinson Commercial, which also sells alcohol and houses the only fuel pump in town. The price of fuel is generally 35-40% higher than prices in Fairbanks. Coal Creek Historic Mining District
The Coal Creek Historic Mining District (Hän: ''Zhùr näddhä`ww juu'') is a gold-mining area in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve of Alaska dating from the 1930s. It features a gold dredge and a supporting community of several dozen buildings, established by mining entrepreneur Ernest Patty. The listed area includes the last of Coal Creek before the Yukon River, where, at the mouth, the roadhouse Slaven's Cabin is included. It includes two former locations and the current location of the gold dredging operation. It includes 26 contributing buildings and 12 contributing structures and three contributing sites. The architecture is strictly functional, besides the roadhouse. The district contains buildings, structures, a dredge, water system, tailings piles, and other mine engineering sites and objects that together represent Alaskan dredge mining operations of the 1930s. The Yukon Quest, formally the Yukon Quest 1,000-mile International Sled Dog Race, is a sled dog race scheduled every February since 1984 between Fairbanks, Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Whitehorse, Yukon, Whitehorse, Yukon, switching directions each year. Because of the harsh winter conditions, difficult trail, and the limited support that competitors are allowed, it is considered the "most difficult sled dog race in the world", or even the "toughest race in the world"—"even tougher, more selective and less attention-seeking than the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race."
