Skicross
Ski cross is a skiing competition which incorporates terrain features traditionally found in freestyle skiing with courses which include big-air jumps and high-banked turns. In spite of the fact that it is a timed racing event, it is often considered a type of freestyle skiing. What sets ski cross apart from other alpine skiing disciplines is that it involves more than one skier racing down the course. Any intentional contact with other competitors like grabbing or any other forms of contact meant to give the competitor an advantage leads to disqualification. Ski cross is a part of the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, the world championship organized by the FIS for freestyle skiing. Ashleigh McIvor
Ashleigh McIvor DeMerit (born September 15, 1983) is a Canadian retired freestyle skier currently residing in Whistler, British Columbia. McIvor was a member of the Canadian national ski cross team and became the first gold medal winner of women's ski cross at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She is also a former world champion in ski cross and has a second-place finish at the Winter X Games to her credit as well. Career McIvor entered ski cross at a young age, and dominated the North American pro tour. As one of the youngest on the World Cup circuit, Ashleigh finished on the podium in her first World Cup race. McIvor has participated with fashion photographers, modeled on runways, and secured major sportswear sponsorships because of her popularity. McIvor started competing in 2003. Michael Schmid (skier)
Michael ("Mike") Schmid (born 18 March 1984) is a Switzerland, Swiss freestyle skiing, freestyle skier who specializes in the ski cross discipline. He is the inaugural Olympic champion in the event. He made his World Cup debut in January 2004 in Laax, and finished among the top thirty for the first time one year later, with a 22nd place in Pozza di Fassa. Then, two tenth places and a thirteenth place followed before the end of the season. He also finished sixth at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships 2005, 2005 World Championships in Rukatunturi, Ruka. In the 2005–06 season he finished eighth three times, and took his first podium with a second place in Kreischberg in January. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation, also known as FIS (), is the highest international governing body for skiing and snowboarding. It was previously known as the International Ski Federation () until 26 May 2022 when the name was changed to include snowboard. Mogul (skiing)
Mogul skiing is a freestyle skiing competition consisting of one timed run of free skiing on a steep, heavily moguled course, stressing technical turns, aerial maneuvers and speed. Internationally, the sport is contested at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Moguls are a series of bumps on a piste formed when skiers push snow into mounds as they do sharp turns. This tends to happen naturally as skiers use the slope but they can also be constructed artificially. Once formed, a naturally occurring mogul tends to grow as skiers follow similar paths around it, further deepening the surrounding grooves known as troughs. Since skiing tends to be a series of linked turns, moguls form together to create a bump field. The term "mogul" is from the Bavarian/Austrian German word ''Mugel'', meaning "mound, hillock".
