Simpson's Hospital, Dublin
Simpson's Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Simpson) is a nursing home in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. History The hospital was founded under the terms of the will of George Simpson, a merchant who lived at 24 Jervis Street, Dublin, in 1779. He suffered from blindness and gout. He devised his estate for the purpose of founding an asylum for blind and gouty men in reduced circumstances. Inmates of the hospital were to be lodged, fed and clothed. On his death in 1775 his trustees bought Putland House for £3,600, but it was found inconvenient as a hospital. In 1784 the inmates were removed to Judge Robinson's house in Jervis Street (on part of the Jervis Street Hospital site), before the hospital moved to a house known as Wyckham, its present location, in Dundrum in 1925. Dundrum (, ''the ridge fort''), originally a town in its own right, is an outer suburb of Dublin, Ireland. The area is located in the postal districts of Dublin 14 and Dublin 16. Dundrum is home to the Dundrum Town Centre, the largest shopping centre in Ireland. History One of the earliest mentions of the area concerns the location of the original St. Nahi's Church in the 8th century on which site today's 18th-century church currently stands. The ancient name for Dundrum is " Taney" which derives from ''Tigh Naithi'' meaning the house or place of Nath Í. Modern archaeological excavations near the church have revealed three enclosures associated with the church, the earliest dating from the 6th century, and one of the finds included an almost complete Flemish Redware jug from the 13th century. Jervis Street Hospital
Jervis Street Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Shráid Jervis) was a hospital in Jervis Street in Dublin, Ireland. The site of the hospital became the Jervis Shopping Centre. History The hospital was founded by six Dublin surgeons, George Duany, Patrick Kelly, Nathaniel Handson, John Dowdall, Francis Donany and Peter Brenan, at their own expense, as the Charitable Infirmary in Cook Street, Dublin, in 1718. The hospital moved to larger premises on King's Inn's Quay in 1728. In 1786, when the new Four Courts were about to be erected on the quays, an agreement was reached with the Earl of Charlemont to allow the hospital to move into his former mansion at 14 Jervis Street, which happened in October 1796. Some time afterwards alterations were made in the house to convert it for hospital purposes.
