Early life Handegard was educated at Rogne Upper Secondary School, specialising in nursing auxiliary skills. She worked as a nursing auxiliary in Jondal and Vikevollen between 1981 and 2007. She finished her secondary education in Ås in 1984, and graduated from Mære Agricultural School in 1986 and the Norwegian College of Agriculture in 1990.
