Signos (film)
''Signos'' ''(Omens)'' is a 1983 documentary film that interviewed activists, church members, and artists at the height of protests after the assassination of Ninoy Aquino. The film was made by a collective composed of Mike de Leon and other artists, under the Concerned Artists of the Philippines. Interviewees included Senator José W. Diokno, journalist Letty Jimenez Magsanoc, Sister Mary Christine Tan and Sister Mariani Dimaranan, and film director Lino Brocka. Parts of the documentary were shot on Super 8 mm film. Produced during martial law under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, it depicted the street protests that were censored in the Marcos-controlled mass media. Ninoy Aquino, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., a former Senate of the Philippines, Philippine senator, was assassinated on Sunday, August 21, 1983, on the airport apron, apron of Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Manila International Airport (now named Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor). A longtime political opponent of President of the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos, Aquino had just landed in his home country after three years of self-imposed exile in the United States when he was shot in the head while being escorted from an aircraft to a vehicle that was waiting to transport him to prison. Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc (September 13, 1941 – December 24, 2015) was a Filipino journalist and editor, notable for her role in overthrowing the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. She was an icon of democracy. Magsanoc was editor of the crusading weekly opposition tabloid ''Mr & Ms Special Edition''. She was editor in chief of the ''Philippine Daily Inquirer''. Magsanoc is among three journalists whose names were added to the Bantayog ng mga Bayani (Monument of Heroes) Wall of Remembrance in 2016. Bantayog ng mga Bayani cited her for "speaking truth to power without fear." Magasanoc was recognized "for testing the limits of press freedom as writer and editor, for defying media restrictions and censorship under martial rule and for facing up to the wrath of the dictatorship." Amanda Limgenco Tan, RGS (November 30, 1930 – October 6, 2003), commonly known as ''Mary Christine Tan'', was a Filipino missionary, nun, and activist, who was known to be one of the key figures who was against the human rights abuses during the Martial law era. She headed the Association of Major Religious Superiors of Women (AMRSP) from 1973 to 1976, a group of nuns who opposed the Martial Law dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, and helped Filipinos in poverty. Mariani Cuevas Dimaranan, (February 1, 1925 – December 17, 2005) was a Catholic nun and activist in the Philippines who fought against the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Dimaranan headed Task Force Detainees of the Philippines, created in the early years of martial law in the Philippines by the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines to investigate and document human rights abuses. Catalino Ortiz Brocka (April 3, 1939 – May 22, 1991) was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema. His filmography often addressed the country's societal issues, and despite his initial closeness with the Marcos family, his work eventually grew to have anti-authoritarian themes in opposition to the Marcos dictatorship.
