Siege Of Naarden (1813–1814)
The siege of Naarden was an investment of the city of Naarden from November 1813 until May 1814 by a Dutch and Russian army as part of the liberation of the Netherlands during the War of the Sixth Coalition. This siege took months, since the French commander didn't believe that Napoleon had been defeated and had abdicated. Finally, the French soldiers were granted a retreat with honour. Prelude In October 1813, Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Leipzig. As a result, the Sixth Coalition attempted to expel the French from the Netherlands, which had been annexed by France in 1810. William Frederick, son of the last stadtholder of the old Dutch Republic, had been in exile in England, and returned to Holland in November 1813. Naarden
Naarden () is a List of cities in the Netherlands by province, city and former List of municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in the Gooi region in the Provinces of the Netherlands, province of North Holland, Netherlands. It has been part of the new municipality of Gooise Meren since 2016. History Naarden was granted its City rights in the Netherlands, city rights in 1300 (the only town in the Gooi with these rights) and later developed into a fortified garrison town with a textile industry. In 1572, the city was sacked and burnt down, and only 60 people survived the Massacre of Naarden. The massacre was committed by Spanish soldiers against the townspeople of Naarden as part of a punitive expedition against Dutch rebels later known as the Spanish Fury. Gooise Meren () is a municipality in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. It has about 58,000 inhabitants and covers an area of about . Gooise Meren has existed since 2016. It is a merger of the three former municipalities of Bussum, Muiden (including Muiderberg) and Naarden. Eastern (Naarden area) and southern part (Bussum area) of the municipality lie within the Gooi region, western part (Muiden area) lies within the Vechtstreek region.
