Shlomo Halberstam (first Bobover Rebbe)
Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam (, ; 1847 –1905) was a community rabbi and a Hasidic Rebbe, founder of the Hasidic dynasty of Bobov (Hasidic dynasty), Bobov. He was the son of Rabbi Myer Noson Halberstam (1827-1855). Rabbi Shlomo was a grandson of the ''Chaim Halberstam, Divrei Chaim'' of Sanz (Hasidic dynasty), Sanz (1793-1876), a Hasidic Judaism, Hasidic sage of the 19th century whose influence established the groundwork for many other Galicia (Central Europe), Galician Hasidic movements. Halberstam became an orphan at age eight, and lived with his grandfather, the ''Divrei Chaim'', for most of his early life. He married the daughter of Rabbi Yehoshua of Kamianka-Buzka, Kaminka. In later life he remarried; his second wife was the daughter of Rabbi Menashe of Drohobycz. Bobov Synagogue (Kraków)
The Bobov Synagogue () is a former Hasidic Orthodox Jewish congregation and synagogue, located at 12 Estery Street, in the historic Kazimierz district of Kraków, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of Poland. Completed in 1871, the synagogue was established by followers of Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam of Bobov. History The synagogue was founded on the first story of an apartment block and also contained a Talmudic school which was situated adjacent to the prayer hall. During World War II, the Nazis vandalized the synagogue. At the end of the war, the synagogue was converted into apartments. Since the summer of 1990, it has been used as a hostel for the poor. Nothing remains today indicating its former use as a synagogue. Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam (; born 1955) is an American born Hasidic rabbi. He is the current Rebbe of the Bobov (Hasidic dynasty), Bobov Hasidic dynasty. Appointed in 2005, Halberstam has a direct lineage to the founder of the Bobov Hasidic dynasty. Early life Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam was born to the third Bobover rebbe Shlomo Halberstam (third Bobover rebbe), Shlomo Halberstam and his second wife. His father had lost his first wife and most of their children in the Holocaust, but a son, Naftali Halberstam, Naftali, survived. Naftali was later reunited with the family in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Appointment Right after his father's passing in 2000, Naftali was appointed as fourth Bobover Rebbe at age 69, while Halberstam was appointed as ''Rav Hatza'ir'' (assistant rabbi). Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam (1908 — August 2, 2000) (), was the third Rebbe of Bobov who re-established the Hasidic dynasty in the United States after World War II. Born in Poland, he was the oldest son of Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam (1874–1941) of Bobov, who was murdered by the Nazis and their Ukrainian collaborators in the Holocaust. Rebuilding Starting off with a small yeshiva for sixteen boys in the West Side of Manhattan, Grand Rebbe Shlomo Halberstam rebuilt the Bobov institutions in America, Israel and in London after the Holocaust. He also rebuilt in another way: he remarried, having lost his first wife and most of their children during the Holocaust. Grand Rebbe Shlomo Halberstam died in the summer of 2000, and was succeeded by his oldest son, Rabbi Naftali Halberstam (1931–2005). Ben Zion Halberstam
Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam (1874–1941) was the second Bobover Rebbe, known as the Baal Kedushas Tzion. He was murdered by the Nazis in 1941. Biography Halberstam was born in Bikofsk in 1874. His father was Shlomo Halberstam (1847–1905), the first Rebbe of Bobov, and a scion of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Upon his father's death Halberstam succeeded him as Rebbe. He authored a commentary on the Torah called ''Kedushas Tzion''. Lwów, where Halberstam then lived, fell under Nazi control in July, 1941. For about a month Halberstam hid in a room whose door was secretly blocked by a large bookcase. But a friend convinced him to come out of hiding, on the theory that the Germans were harsher to people who were found hiding. The friend also argued that the Germans would honor Halberstam’s official papers that declared he was a foreign resident.
