The Shire of Ravensthorpe is a local government area in the southern Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about halfway between the city of Albany and the town of Esperance and about southeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Ravensthorpe. History The Phillips River Road District was gazetted on 9 November 1900. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Ravensthorpe under the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Ravensthorpe, Western Australia
Ravensthorpe is a town 541 km south-east of Perth and 40 km inland from the south coast of Western Australia. It is the seat of government of the Shire of Ravensthorpe. At the , Ravensthorpe had a population of 2,085. In 1848, the area was surveyed by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe who named many of the geographical features nearby, including the nearby Ravensthorpe Range that the later town was named after. There was one of the Western Australian Government Railways isolated branch lines between Hopetoun, Western Australia, Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe. This line, the Hopetoun to Ravensthorpe railway line, opened in 1909. Alluvial gold was discovered at the Phillips River in 1892. West River is a rural locality of the Shire of Ravensthorpe in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The South Coast Highway passes through the locality from west to east. West River borders the Fitzgerald River National Park to the south and the townsite of Fitzgerald to the west. The West River and the Hamersley River originate in the locality. Munglinup, Western Australia
Munglinup is a small town located in the Shire of Ravensthorpe in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia. The town lies on the South Coast Highway between Ravensthorpe and Esperance and close to the Munglinup River. The river for most of its course defines the boundary of the Esperance and Ravensthorpe shires. At the Oldfield Estuary, the boundary goes to the eastern shore. The word Munglinup is Noongar in origin and means ''where young people met their in-laws.'' The name first appears on maps made by the Dempster brothers, early settlers of the area in 1868. The region was first opened up for farming in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s, the community asked for a townsite between Esperance and Ravensthorpe to be considered. Jerdacuttup is a small town in Western Australia east-south-east of Perth between Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia. At the 2006 census, Jerdacuttup had a population of six. John Forrest explored the area in 1870 and spelt the word as ''Jerdicutup''; the area was later surveyed in 1875 by C Price who recorded the name of the area as ''Jerdicat'' and ''Verdicat''. ''Jerdacuttup'' is an Aboriginal word of unknown meaning. During the 1960s the south-east of Western Australia was opened for agricultural purposes and the town was developed as a supply centre for the region. The government gazetted the townsite in 1966. The dominant agricultural industry in the area is sheep grazing and cereal cropping with cattle grazing and lupin cropping to a lesser extent. Hopetoun, Western Australia
Hopetoun is a town on the south coast of Western Australia in the Shire of Ravensthorpe. Located on Mary Ann Harbour, Hopetoun is south-east from capital city Perth, west of Esperance and 41 kilometres (25 mi) south of Ravensthorpe. History Mary Ann Harbour was named in November 1865 by the sealer James Sale on the cutter ''Mary Ann''. ''Mary Ann'' was owned by whaling master John Thomas of Cheyne's Beach, east of Albany, who had named it after his eldest daughter. Hopetoun was established in 1900 as the port servicing the Phillips River goldfield, named after the first Governor-General of Australia, John Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun. The townsite was gazetted on 9 February 1901. Fitzgerald River National Park is a national park in the Shire of Ravensthorpe, Shires of Ravensthorpe and the Shire of Jerramungup in Western Australia, southeast of Perth. The park is recognised on National Heritage List (Australia), Australia's National Heritage List for its outstanding diversity of native plant species, including many plants which are unique to the local area. Although the park only occupies 0.2 percent of Western Australia's land surface, it is home to over 20% of the state's native plant species.
