The Shire of Mansfield was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1865 until 1994. History Mansfield was incorporated as a road district on 6 January 1865, and became a shire on 31 December 1866. On 18 November 1994, the Shire of Mansfield was abolished, and along with the City of Benalla, the Shire of Benalla and the Warrenbayne district from the Shire of Violet Town, was merged into the newly created Shire of Delatite. The Hume is an economic rural region located in the north-eastern part of Victoria, Australia. Comprising an area in excess of with a population that ranges from (in 2011) to (in 2012), the Hume region includes the local government areas of Alpine Shire, Rural City of Benalla, City of Wodonga, City of Greater Shepparton, Shire of Indigo, Shire of Mansfield, Shire of Strathbogie, Shire of Towong and the Rural City of Wangaratta, and also includes five unincorporated areas encompassing the alpine ski resorts in the region. Jamieson, Victoria
Jamieson is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is located at the junction of the Goulburn River and Jamieson River, north-east of Melbourne. The name is believed to have been derived from George Jamieson, a shepherd who grazed sheep in the area in the 1850s. At the time of the , Jamieson had a population of 301. History The area was first settled in 1860 and by 1861 there were approximately 300 people working the goldfields. According to the book Jamieson Founders and Families by Dr Brian Lloyd, the first Post Office in the upper Goulburn district was at Mansfield in 1858. Gaffneys Creek, Victoria
Gaffneys Creek is a former mining locality situated between Jamieson and Woods Point in Victoria, Australia. It is located at the junction of Gaffney and Raspberry Creeks in a steep valley in mountainous terrain. It is situated in the Shire of Mansfield on the unsealed Mansfield - Woods Point Rd. History Gold A prospector from the Big River area to the east, Terence "Red" Gaffney, was the first to actively search the area for gold, followed by John and William (Bill the Welshman) Jones who discovered rich alluvial gold at Raspberry Creek in 1859. A string of small villages later appeared in the valley, and these were subsequently amalgamated and collectively named Lauraville by the Government Surveyor in honour of his wife, Laura. Bonnie Doon is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Maroondah Highway, in the Shire of Mansfield. Bonnie Doon is 168 kilometres north-east from Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Bonnie Doon township had a population of 570. History The township was established subsequent to gold discoveries in the area. It was originally named Doon after the town of that name in Ireland. The Post Office opened on 1 October 1866 and was renamed Bonnie Doon in 1891 coinciding with the arrival of the railway. Much of the original town of Bonnie Doon was flooded by the construction of Lake Eildon in the 1950s. The Mansfield Shire is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018, had a population of 8,979. It includes the towns of Mansfield, Maindample, Mount Buller, Bonnie Doon, Jamieson, Kevington, Merrijig, Tolmie and Woods Point. It was formed in 2002 from the de-amalgamation of the Shire of Delatite into the current shire and the Rural City of Benalla. The de-amalgamation was the only successful de-amalgamation following the Kennett Government's policy of local government mergers. It was the result of organised political activity, with parallels to other autonomy movements. The Shire of Delatite was a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covered an area of and, at the , had a population of 21,553. It included the towns of Benalla and Mansfield, and was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the City of Benalla, Shire of Benalla, the then Shire of Mansfield and part of the Shire of Violet Town. The City of Benalla was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city, which was surrounded by the Shire of Benalla, covered an area of , and existed from 1948 until 1994. History The Shire of Benalla was first incorporated as a road district on 4 September 1868, and became a shire on 3 September 1869. On 1 September 1948, after considerable growth of Benalla as a regional centre, the Central Riding was severed from the shire, to become the Borough of Benalla. Further land was transferred to the borough on 10 April 1956 and 1 February 1964, after which the borough was proclaimed a city by the Governor of Victoria, on 26 May 1965.
