The Shire of Etheridge is a Local government in Australia, local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia in what is known as the Savannah Gulf region. Its economy is based on cattle grazing and mining. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1882. In the , the Shire of Etheridge had a population of 714 people. History The Einasleigh Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 720. In 1891 it was reported that the divisional board had made no progress, perhaps because it covered a large area that was sparsely settled. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', Einasleigh Division became the Shire of Einasleigh on 31 March 1903. On 15 March 1919, it was renamed Shire of Etheridge. Kidston, Queensland
Kidston is a ghost town within the rural locality of Einasleigh, Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. What remains of the built structure of the town is heritage-listed as the Kidston State Battery & Township. History Oak's Rush was a gold mining area. A small amount of gold was found there by Charles Mack who then teamed up with Charles Hawkins and together found more substantial quantities of gold in September 1907. By 1908 there were three hotels in the town. Cumberland, Queensland
Cumberland is a ghost town in the rural locality of Georgetown within the Shire of Etheridge in Queensland, Australia. It is located approximately west of the town of Georgetown on the Gulf Developmental Road. History Boom Cumberland was born when gold was discovered there in 1872 and the first prospecting claim was registered in that same year. By 1878, it was one of the major producers of gold in the Etheridge goldfield. The Cumberland Company dammed nearby Cumberland Creek to create a permanent water supply for the township. A battery and cyanide plant was built by the creek in 1880. The town site was surveyed in June 1882 by T.R. Geraghty. High levels of gold production continued through the 1880s peaking in 1886, and the town grew to a population of about 400 people. In 1885 a police station and telegraph station were established. Mount Surprise is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Mount Surprise had a population of 138 people. Geography The town is located in the Gulf Savannah in Far North Queensland on the Gulf Developmental Road, north west of the state capital, Brisbane and west of the regional centre of Cairns. History The town was founded by Ezra Firth, from the English county of Yorkshire, who along with his family settled in the area in 1864. The property struggled at first; relations with the indigenous inhabitants of the country were hostile and the country was not suited for wool growing. The discovery of gold in the 1880s and the subsequent gold rush allowed Firth to sell his sheep to the miners, convert his holding to cattle and become wealthy selling goods to the miners.
