The Shire of Bairnsdale was a local government area about east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1867 until 1994. For its first one hundred years it governed both Bairnsdale and the surrounding area; however, after that time, Bairnsdale itself had its own local government authority. History Bairnsdale was first incorporated as a road district on 30 April 1867, and became a shire on 14 July 1868. On 6 January 1882, the Shire of Tambo, centred on Lakes Entrance, split away from Bairnsdale. On 27 May 1914 and 1 October 1964, it lost some land to its west to the Shire of Avon. On 31 May 1967, after a poll of ratepayers, the Centre Riding and parts of the East Riding severed, to form the Town of Bairnsdale, which became a city in 1990. Road Districts Of Victoria (Australia)
Road districts were established in the colony of Victoria, Australia, pursuant to legislation passed in 1853 and were an early form of local government in Victoria. The districts were outside towns, which were instead incorporated either as municipalities or boroughs. The road districts were created between 1853 and 1871. Road districts were established after public meetings to discuss boundaries etc. followed by a petition to the governor. Upon the proclamation of a district a public meeting was held to elect officers of the Road Board, which was responsible for the building and maintenance of local roads and bridges and raised finance from rates levied on landowners. Wy Yung, Victoria
Wy Yung is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on Great Alpine Road, in the Shire of East Gippsland near Bairnsdale. The town's name means wild duck in the local indigenous language. White settlers moved to the district in the 1860s and by the next decade there was enough population for two schools and a hotel to be opened in the 1870s, it remained a farming district until the 1970s when demand for urban housing began.
