Sherwood Forest (UK Parliament Constituency)
Sherwood Forest is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Michelle Welsh, of the Labour Party. The constituency's name is shared with Sherwood Forest, which is in the area. The constituency was formerly known as Sherwood. It was renamed as a result of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, with minor boundary changes. It is first being contested under the new name at the 2024 general election. Electoral District Of Sherwood
Sherwood was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. First created for the 1950 state election, the district was based in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, covering areas that previously belonged to the abolished district of Oxley. At first taking in a wide sweep of then-outer suburban areas such as Sunnybank, Runcorn and Kuraby, it came to be based in the Chelmer peninsula and the Centenary Suburbs from the 1960 election onwards, and was a very safe Liberal seat for its entire existence. Sherwood was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Most of its territory was allocated to the new districts of Indooroopilly and Mount Ommaney. Ashfield () is a local government district in Nottinghamshire, England. The population of Ashfield was 127,200 in 2018. The district is mostly urban and forms part of both the Nottingham and Mansfield Urban Areas. There are three towns in the district; Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Hucknall. The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by the merger of urban districts of Hucknall, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield and parts of Basford Rural District, namely the parishes of Annesley, Felley and Selston. 2010 United Kingdom General Election
The 2010 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010, with 45,597,461 registered voters entitled to vote to elect members to the House of Commons. The election took place in 650 constituencies across the United Kingdom under the first-past-the-post system. The election resulted in a large swing to the Conservative Party similar to that seen in 1979, the last time a Conservative opposition had ousted a Labour government. The Labour Party lost the 66-seat majority it had previously enjoyed, but no party achieved the 326 seats needed for a majority. The Conservatives, led by David Cameron, won the most votes and seats, but still fell 20 seats short. Paddy Tipping
Simon Patrick Tipping (born 24 October 1949) is a British former politician who served as Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner between 2012 and 2021. A member of the Labour Party, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for Sherwood from 1992 to 2010. Early life Tipping was born in Halifax. He went to Hipperholme Grammar School (then a state school) in Hipperholme in West Yorkshire. He gained a BA in Philosophy at Nottingham University in 1972 and an MA in Social Sciences in 1978. He was a social worker in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire from 1972 until 1979. Between 1979 and 1983 he was a Project Leader for the (Church of England) Children's Society in Nottingham. The 1992 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 9 April 1992, to elect 651 members to the House of Commons. The election resulted in the fourth consecutive victory for the Conservative Party since 1979 and would be the last time that the Conservatives would win an overall majority at a general election until 2015. It was also the last general election to be held on a day which did not coincide with any local elections until 2017. Andrew Struthers Stewart (27 May 1937 − 6 October 2013) was a British Conservative Party politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sherwood from 1983 to 1992. Early life Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Stewart was educated at Strathaven Academy and West of Scotland Agricultural College. He chaired Strathaven Young Unionists in 1957–58. Political career Having moved to Nottinghamshire to establish himself as a farmer, Stewart was elected to Nottinghamshire County Council in 1977, serving until he resigned on election to Parliament. Sherwood () is a large district and ward of the city of Nottingham, England, north of the city centre. The population at the 2011 census was 15,414. It is bordered by Woodthorpe to the northeast, Mapperley to the east, Carrington to the south, New Basford and Basford to the west, and Daybrook and Bestwood to the north. It should be carefully distinguished from Sherwood Forest, the Sherwood parliamentary constituency, and Newark and Sherwood district council, all of which lie several miles further north outside the city boundaries.
