Sherman D. Horton Jr.
Sherman Duesenbury Horton Jr. (February 19, 1931 – December 3, 2014) was a justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1990 to 2000. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended Kemper Military School. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and in 1958 graduated from Harvard Law School. Between his time at Dartmouth and Harvard, he served in the United States Navy. He was a lawyer in Nashua, New Hampshire, Nashua before he was nominated to the state Supreme Court by governor Judd Gregg.Mike Recht,Horton named for top court, ''Concord Monitor'' (May 24, 1990), p. B-1, B-8. He replaced David Souter, who became a justice on the United States Supreme Court. Horton was the first person who was not previously a judge to be nominated to the court in five decades, the previous being chief justice Frank R. Kenison. New Hampshire Supreme Court
The New Hampshire Supreme Court is the state supreme court, supreme court of the U.S. state of New Hampshire and sole appellate court of the state. The Supreme Court is seated in the state capital, Concord, New Hampshire, Concord. The Court is composed of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices appointed by the Governor of New Hampshire, Governor and Executive Council of New Hampshire, Executive Council to serve during "good behavior" until retirement or the age of seventy. The senior member of the Court is able to specially assign lower-court judges, as well as retired justices, to fill vacancies on the Court. The Supreme Court is the administrative authority over the state's judicial system. The Court has both mandatory and discretionary appellate jurisdiction.
