Sheldon L. Toomer
Sheldon Lyne Toomer Jr. (July 14, 1872 – September 27, 1957) was an American politician and businessman. A member of the Alabama Democratic Party, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1935 to 1939, and in the Alabama Senate from 1943 to 1947. He also served as the mayor of Auburn, Alabama in 1918. Education Sheldon Toomer attended Auburn University, which was known at the time as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. During his time at Auburn, he played halfback for the 1892 Auburn Tigers football team, the first football team at Auburn. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He graduated in 1893 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and agriculture. He spent three years at Texas A&M teaching, before returning to Auburn in 1896 and graduating with a degree in pharmacy in 1897. Alabama Senate
The Alabama State Senate is the upper house of the Alabama Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Alabama. The body is composed of 35 members representing an equal number of districts across the state, with each district containing at least 127,140 citizens. Similar to the lower house, the Alabama House of Representatives, the senate serves both without term limits and with a four-year term. Alpha Tau Omega
Alpha Tau Omega (), commonly known as ATO, is an American social Fraternities and sororities, fraternity founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1865 by Otis Allan Glazebrook. The fraternity has around 250 active and inactive chapters and colonies in the United States and has initiated more than 229,000 members. VMI Cadets are no longer associated with the fraternity. In 1885, the VMI Board of Visitors ruled that cadets could no longer join fraternities based on the belief that allegiance to a fraternal group undermined the cohesiveness of and loyalty to the Corps of Cadets. Alpha Tau Omega represents one-third of the Lexington Triad, along with Kappa Alpha Order and Sigma Nu. The Fraternity does not have chapters or affiliations outside the United States. Toomer's Corner
Toomer's Corner is a street corner located at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and College Street, and marks the northeastern-most reach of the campus of Auburn University, and the beginning of downtown Auburn, Alabama. Two landmarks are located on Toomer's Corner, the Bank of Auburn (now a branch of PNC Bank) and Toomer's Drugs Pharmacy, which was the first establishment in the city with a telegraph, and the intersection is patterned in bricks forming the paw print logo of the Auburn Tigers athletic teams (it was formerly painted on regular concrete). The employees at Toomer's Drugs Pharmacy, after discovering that Auburn had won a football game before the team broadcast away games on radio, would throw the ticker tape from their telegraph onto the power lines. The 1892 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University in the 1892 college football season. It was the first college football team fielded by the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, now known as Auburn University. The squad was first coached by George Petrie.
