Shelby Township is one of ten Civil township, townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,151 and it contained 458 housing units. History The first land acquired by settlers was in 1809 on the northern border with Ripley County. Many early settlers were Scotch-Irish and were prominent in forming the Jefferson Presbyterian Church in 1818. Another early group was what was known as "Low Dutch", families primarily of Dutch origin who had lived in the New Amsterdam settlements in New York and New Jersey and who moved to Kentucky in the early 1780s. They were also involved in the formation of Jefferson Presbyterian, but joined the former Pleasant Presbyterian church in neighboring Switzerland County when it formed in 1829. Shelby County is a County (United States), county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 11,746. The county seat is Harlan, Iowa, Harlan. Its name is in honor of Isaac Shelby, the first Governor of Kentucky. History Shelby County was established on January 15, 1851. It was named after General Isaac Shelby, a hero in the American Revolutionary War and the first Governor of Kentucky. Early settling in Shelby County began in 1848 in Galland's Grove. On February 4, 1855, Shelbyville was designated the county seat. In April 1859, the seat was moved to Harlan. One year later the first courthouse was erected and a second courthouse was constructed in 1875.
