She Loves And Lies
''She Loves and Lies'' is a 1920 American silent comedy drama film directed by Chester Withey and starring Norma Talmadge, Conway Tearle, and Octavia Broske. An incomplete surviving print is preserved in the Library of Congress collection. The film had the working title ''Two Women''. Plot As described in a film magazine, Marie Callender (Talmadge) becomes engaged to a wealthy Lothario, but regrets it after Ernest Lismore (Tearle), who is in financial difficulties, rescues her from a burning building. She breaks the engagement but is left the wealthy man's fortune. Learning of Ernest's predicament, she poses as an elderly woman and proposes that Ernest marry her to save himself from financial ruin. He agrees, and after their marriage Marie poses as a painter in the bohemian quarter of the city to see if Ernest will love her. Chester Withey
Chester "Chet" Withey (8 November 1887, Park City, Utah – 6 October 1939, California) was an American silent film actor, Film director, director, and screenwriter. He participated in the production in total of some 100 films. Born in Park City, Utah, the son of Chester Henry Withey and Mary E. Kelso, Withey started his career in silent film as an actor in 1913. He starred in films such as the 1916 film ''The Wharf Rat''. He married Virginia Philley, a screenwriter, who also did some acting. However, by 1916, he had already directed several films and decided to concentrate on work behind the camera. Withey was also accredited with writing for 15 films. He retired from film directing in 1928 and died 6 October 1939. Phillips Tead (September 29, 1893 – June 9, 1974) was an American character actor in film and television, sometimes billed as Phil Tead. Biography Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1893, among his many roles, Tead might be best remembered as the semi-recurring character "Professor Pepperwinkle," an eccentric inventor, in several of the color episodes of the 1950s TV series '' Adventures of Superman.'' His appearances included the final episode, "All That Glitters." His first appearance had been as a shopkeeper named Mr. Willy, a similarly eccentric character. A visible early role is his appearance in '' Horse Feathers'', the 1932 Marx Brothers comedy, in which he plays a radio play-by-play announcer at the film's climactic college football game. His film career began in silent pictures in 1914 and ran some 40 years. She performed on the New York stage for 40 years. During the 10 years she resided in California, she was under contract to David Selznick as part of the Selznick Pictures Corporation stock company.
