Vera Lewis (June 10, 1873 – February 8, 1956) was an American film and stage actress, beginning in the silent film era. She appeared in more than 180 films from 1915 to 1947. She was married to actor Ralph Lewis. Biography She was born in Manhattan, where she began acting in stage productions. Her film career started in 1915 with the film '' Hypocrites'', which starred Myrtle Stedman and Courtenay Foote. From 1915 to 1929, she appeared in 63 silent films, including the film classic ''Intolerance'' (1916), where she played the "old maid" Miss Jenkins. Unlike many silent film stars, she made a smooth transition to sound films, starting with her 1930 appearance in '' Wide Open'', starring Patsy Ruth Miller and Edward Everett Horton. Already age 56 by the time of her first sound film, she appeared in 58 films during the 1930s and another 60 during the 1940s, almost all of them as a character actress. Milla Davenport
Milla Davenport (February 4, 1871 in Zurich – May 17, 1936) was an American stage and film actress who first appeared with the repertory company of her husband, actor Harry J. Davenport (1870-1929), for fifteen years. Davenport then began a career in motion pictures in the silent film ''Trapping the Bachelor'' (1916). She was in '' Daddy-Long-Legs'' (1919) with Mary Pickford, ''The Brat'' (1919) with Nazimova, '' Sins of the Fathers'' (1928) with Emil Jannings, and '' The Wedding Night'' (1935). Davenport continued to make movies well into the sound film era. Her last film credits are for roles in '' The Defense Rests'' (1934), '' Here Comes Cookie'' (1935), and an uncredited part in '' Human Cargo'' (1936). Davenport died in Los Angeles, California in 1936, aged 65. She was buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Carmen Gertrude Short (April 6, 1902 – July 31, 1968) was an American film actress of the silent and early sound era. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1945. Biography Gertrude Short was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of actors Lewis and Stella Short. From 1913 to 1945, she acted on stage, on film, and in vaudeville. Short debuted on stage in ''The Story of the Golden Fleece'' in San Francisco when she was 5 years old. In her screen debut, she portrayed Little Eva in the silent film ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. She went on to act in films through the 1930s and into the 1940s. Film companies with which she worked included Edison, Metro, Paramount, Robertson-Cole, and Universal. Short's Broadway credits include ''Arrest That Woman'' (1936). She stopped acting during World War II and went to work for Lockheed Corporation, from which she retired in 1967.
